About Gusto
At Gusto, we're on a mission to grow the small business economy. We handle the hard stuff—like payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR—so owners can focus on their craft and customers. With teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, we’re proud to support more than 400,000 small businesses across the country, and we’re building a workplace that represents and celebrates the customers we serve. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy.
About The Role
We're looking for seasoned full-stack software engineers to join the teams behind Gusto's product platforms — the shared systems that our product teams build upon — to serve small business owners every day. As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll operate across the full lifecycle of foundational systems: shaping architecture early in the design process, building self-service internal features and APIs, and owning their performance long after launch. That means engineering the core business engine, enabling product teams with reliable backend services, and setting the engineering standard for those around you. If you're drawn to work that combines technical craft with real-world impact — helping power the livelihoods of millions using Gusto products — join us!
Here’s What You’ll Do Day-to-day
- Design, build, and test Gusto core platform services – communications, reporting, dashboards, access, workflows, risk, payments, and compliance capabilities, among others
- Mentor other engineers to help solve some of the hardest technical problems out there in very complex domains and at a large scale
- Help scale one of the largest Ruby/Rails and Javascript/React applications in the world
- Collaborate with our Product Engineering, Product Management, Data, and Design teams to understand customer pain points, come up with solutions, and then prototype, iterate, and launch daily
Here’s What We're Looking For
- Successful applicants typically have 8+ years of software development experience
- Passion for creating scalable, efficient platforms for users
- Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new platform capabilities
- Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks, applying and sharing best practices to evaluate and scale AI use safely across teams
- Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and make measurable user impact at scale
- Experience with large scale refactors, performance and reliability issues, and a strong sense of ownership over all aspects of your platform area
- Ability to mentor engineers to maximize their performance and impact
Others
- Experience in, or interest working in, Ruby on Rails
- Appreciation for a collaborative, test-driven environment
- Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, well-documented code
- Ability to effectively communicate across engineering teams and with business stakeholders
Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $163,000–$204,000 in Denver & most remote locations, and $197,000–$247,000 for San Francisco & New York. Stock equity is additional. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale. Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas. When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees.
Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Gusto.
Gusto is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate in hiring or any employment decision based on race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), marital status, ancestry, physical or mental disability, genetic information, veteran status, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, or other applicable legally protected characteristic. Gusto considers qualified applicants with criminal histories, consistent with applicable federal, state and local law. Gusto is also committed to providing reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities and disabled veterans in our job application procedures. Align your stack with Gusto's infrastructure
Gusto's backend handles real-time payroll processing and tax calculations at scale. Highlighting experience with distributed systems, event-driven architecture, or financial data pipelines positions you as someone who can contribute to their core product immediately.
Request LCA details before signing your offer
Your employer files a Labor Condition Application with DOL before USCIS can process your H-1B petition. Ask Gusto's recruiting team which wage level they intend to certify so you're not surprised by a prevailing wage determination that affects your offered compensation.
Use Migrate Mate to find open backend roles at Gusto
Backend Software Engineer openings at Gusto span multiple teams and don't all surface on general job boards at the same time. Migrate Mate filters specifically for visa-sponsoring employers, so you can track Gusto's backend listings without manually checking their careers page daily.
Build experience in compliance-adjacent domains
Gusto's product touches payroll tax, benefits administration, and regulatory reporting. Backend engineers who can speak to data integrity, audit trails, or financial systems in interviews stand out from candidates with only consumer product backgrounds.
Confirm Green Card pathway support during negotiation
Gusto has sponsored EB-2 and EB-3 PERM cases for engineering roles. Before you accept an offer, ask HR whether they support PERM labor certification and at what tenure, since not all backend roles are treated identically for immigrant visa sponsorship.

Find Backend Software Engineer at Gusto JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Gusto sponsor H-1B visas for Backend Software Engineers?
Yes, Gusto sponsors H-1B visas for Backend Software Engineers. The company has a consistent track record of filing petitions for engineering roles, which means they're familiar with the USCIS process and have internal infrastructure to support it. If you're subject to the H-1B cap, timing your offer around the April registration window is critical, so early engagement with their recruiting team matters.
Which visa types does Gusto commonly use for Backend Software Engineers?
Gusto sponsors H-1B visas for the broadest range of international engineers, along with E-3 visas for Australian citizens and EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visas for candidates pursuing permanent residence through the PERM labor certification process. If you hold TN or O-1 eligibility, it's worth discussing those categories directly with Gusto's HR team, as sponsorship approaches can vary by role and team.
How do I apply for Backend Software Engineer jobs at Gusto?
You can browse Gusto's open Backend Software Engineer roles on their careers page or use Migrate Mate, which aggregates visa-sponsoring employer listings and lets you filter specifically for Gusto's engineering openings. The interview process typically includes a recruiter screen, a technical phone assessment, and a multi-stage loop covering system design and coding. Mentioning your visa status early in the recruiter call helps both sides move efficiently.
What qualifications does Gusto expect for Backend Software Engineer roles?
Gusto typically looks for a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a closely related field, which also satisfies the specialty occupation requirement for H-1B eligibility. Beyond credentials, their backend roles emphasize distributed systems experience, proficiency in languages like Ruby or Go, and familiarity with large-scale data processing. Experience with financial systems, payroll pipelines, or compliance tooling strengthens your candidacy meaningfully.
How do I plan my timeline if Gusto is sponsoring my H-1B?
If you need a new H-1B, USCIS opens registration in early March and the cap-subject fiscal year begins October 1. That means a roughly six-month gap between selection and your earliest possible start date under standard processing. Premium processing can reduce the adjudication window to around 15 business days once USCIS accepts the petition. Coordinate your offer acceptance and any OPT or grace period expiration against these dates before you resign from a current role.
