You’ll collaborate closely with Product, Design, AI, Data, and Operations partners to deliver intelligent, scalable customer service systems, including conversational AI workflows, self-service customer journeys, internal tools used by thousands of agents, and infrastructure that enables partner-specific experiences. You’ll report to a Senior Engineering Manager and work alongside engineers focused on platform services, integrations, AI orchestration, and self-service UX.
What Would Your Day-to-day Look Like
- Design, build, and improve the backend and/or full-stack systems that power HTS Assist, internal agent tools, and customer self-serve flows.
- Develop scalable APIs, microservices, and orchestration logic that support complex post-booking journeys across AI, chat, voice, and web.
- Partner with product, design, AI, and operations teams to deliver features that streamline customer experiences and enhance agent efficiency.
- Integrate with external systems, such as telephony, CRM, identity, or booking platforms, to support both internal use cases and partner deployments.
- Own features end-to-end, from technical design through implementation, testing, deployment, monitoring, and iteration.
- Contribute to architectural decisions, code reviews, reliability improvements, and ongoing enhancements to engineering best practices.
- Analyze system performance and user behavior to identify opportunities for automation, optimization, and cost reduction.
Minimum Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in software engineering, ideally building large-scale distributed systems or customer-facing applications
- A strong technical background with modern frontend and backend development, distributed systems, APIs, and cloud infrastructure
- Experience designing, building, and maintaining RESTful APIs, microservices, or event-driven systems
- Experience with databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, NoSQL) and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or similar)
- Ability to break down complex problems, make pragmatic tradeoffs, and ship iteratively
- Strong communication skills and comfort collaborating with cross-functional teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with conversational AI, LLM orchestration, or automation systems
- Experience building customer service, CRM, telephony, contact center, or workflow automation tools
- Familiarity with Scala/Python, React, TypeScript, or modern frontend frameworks for engineers who want to contribute full-stack
- Experience integrating with external systems (e.g., telephony APIs, identity providers, payment gateways, CRMs)
- Knowledge of travel industry technologies (PSS/GDS, hotel PMS/CRS) is a plus, though not required
More About Hopper
At Hopper, we are on a mission to become the leading travel platform globally – powering Hopper’s mobile app, website and our B2B business, HTS (Hopper Technology Solutions). By leveraging massive amounts of data and advanced machine learning algorithms, Hopper combines its world-class travel agency offering with proprietary fintech products to bring transparency, flexibility and savings to travelers globally. We have developed several unique fintech solutions that address everything from pricing volatility to trip disruptions – helping people travel better and save more on their trips. The Hopper platform serves hundreds of millions of travelers globally and continues to capture market share around the world. The Hopper app has been downloaded over 120 million times and has become largely popular among younger travelers – with 70% of its users being Gen Z and millennials. While everyone knows us as the Gen Z and Millennial travel app, Hopper has evolved to become much more than that. In recent years, we’ve grown into a travel fintech provider, commerce platform, and global travel agency that powers some of the world’s largest brands. Through HTS, our B2B division, the company supercharges its partners’ direct channels by integrating our fintech products on their sites or powering end-to-end travel portals. Today, our partners include leading travel brands like Capital One, Nubank, Air Canada, and many more.
Here are just a few stats that demonstrate the company’s recent growth:
- Billions of dollars worth of travel and travel fintech are sold through Hopper and HTS channels every year.
- Our fintech products – including Cancel for Any Reason and Flight Disruption Assistance – have exceptionally strong CSAT because the terms are always clear, and customers receive instant, no-questions-asked resolutions.
- Almost 30% of our app customers purchase at least one fintech product when making a booking; and consumers are 1.6x more likely to repurchase if they add fintech to their booking vs if they booked just travel.
Given the success of its fintech products, Hopper launched a B2B initiative, HTS (Hopper Technology Solutions), which represents more than 75% of the business.
- Through HTS, any travel provider (airlines, hotels, banks, travel agencies, etc.) can integrate and seamlessly distribute Hopper’s fintech or travel inventory on their direct channels.
- As its first HTS partnership, the company partnered with Capital One to co-develop Capital One Travel, a new travel portal designed specifically for cardholders. Other HTS partners include Air Canada, Uber, CommBank, Nubank, Flair Airlines and many more.
Hopper has been named the #1 most innovative company in travel by Fast Company. We have raised over $750 million USD of private capital and are backed by some of the largest institutional investors and banks in the world. HTS is primed to continue its growth as the leading travel ecommerce provider in a $1 trillion online shopping category. The Hopper app and website will also continue to be the preferred travel provider for Gen Z and Millennials.
Compensation Range: $150K - $300K

Frame your portfolio around dynamic pricing models
Hopper's core product relies on price prediction and demand forecasting for flights and hotels. Showcase projects involving time-series modeling, price optimization, or recommendation systems. Generic ML experience matters less than evidence you've worked on travel or marketplace data problems.
Confirm sponsorship eligibility before your first interview
Hopper operates across the U.S. and Canada, so confirm the specific role is U.S.-based and explicitly listed as visa-eligible. Roles posted through Canadian entities won't qualify for H-1B sponsorship, and this distinction rarely appears in job titles.
Target roles during H-1B cap registration windows
H-1B cap registration opens in March each year with an April 1 start date if selected. Aligning your Hopper application to receive an offer before February gives your employer enough lead time to register you without rushing the LCA filing with DOL.
Research Hopper's EB-2 track record for this function
Data science roles frequently qualify for EB-2 sponsorship based on advanced degree requirements. If you hold a master's or PhD in a quantitative field, ask the recruiting team directly whether Hopper initiates PERM-based Green Card sponsorship for Senior Data Science Engineers and at what tenure threshold.
Prepare documentation proving specialty occupation status
USCIS scrutinizes data science job titles because the degree requirement isn't always explicit in postings. Gather transcripts showing a quantitative bachelor's degree or higher, and document how your prior roles required that specific education, not just general analytical ability.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open roles by sponsorship type
Hopper posts Senior Data Science Engineer openings across multiple channels, but not all listings surface sponsorship details. Use Migrate Mate to filter Hopper's active roles by H-1B or EB-2 eligibility so you're only spending time on positions that match your authorization needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Hopper sponsor H-1B visas for Senior Data Science Engineers?
Yes, Hopper sponsors H-1B visas for Senior Data Science Engineer roles. The company has an active sponsorship track record for this function, covering both initial H-1B cap filings and transfers for candidates already holding H-1B status with another employer. Confirming sponsorship availability for a specific posting with the recruiter early in the process is the most reliable approach.
How do I apply for Senior Data Science Engineer jobs at Hopper?
You can browse and apply for Senior Data Science Engineer openings at Hopper directly through their careers page or through Migrate Mate, which filters Hopper's listings by visa sponsorship type. The interview process typically involves a take-home or live coding assessment focused on statistical modeling or data analysis, followed by system design and cross-functional rounds.
Which visa types does Hopper sponsor for Senior Data Science Engineers?
Hopper sponsors both H-1B nonimmigrant visas and employment-based Green Cards, including EB-2 and EB-3 categories, for Senior Data Science Engineers. H-1B is the most common path for candidates entering the U.S. workforce, while EB-2 is frequently available for those with advanced degrees in quantitative fields like statistics, computer science, or applied mathematics.
What qualifications does Hopper expect for Senior Data Science Engineer roles?
Hopper typically looks for a master's degree or higher in a quantitative discipline, though a bachelor's combined with substantial industry experience can qualify. Strong candidates demonstrate proficiency in Python or Scala, experience building production-grade ML systems, and familiarity with large-scale data pipelines. Travel industry domain knowledge, particularly around pricing or demand modeling, is a meaningful differentiator at the senior level.
How do I understand the H-1B filing timeline when targeting Hopper?
USCIS opens H-1B cap registration each March, and petitions for selected registrations can be filed from April 1. To align with this, you'd need an offer from Hopper finalized by late February at the latest, allowing time for the Labor Condition Application with DOL and petition preparation. Candidates already on H-1B with another employer can transfer to Hopper year-round without waiting for the cap cycle.
