Align your credentials with IRC's HR framework
IRC's HR internships emphasize compliance, onboarding, and employee relations in a mission-driven context. Highlight coursework or experience in labor law, HRIS systems, or multicultural workforce support so your background maps directly to what their People teams actually manage.
Research IRC's active hiring locations early
IRC operates offices across more than 20 U.S. cities, and sponsorship decisions often vary by office and budget cycle. Targeting locations with active HR teams, like New York or Washington D.C., increases your chances of landing a role with sponsorship capacity.
Confirm OPT or CPT eligibility before applying
Many IRC HR internships are structured to work within F-1 OPT or CPT authorization. Verify your remaining OPT days or CPT eligibility with your DSO before submitting applications, since IRC will need your work authorization start date to plan their onboarding timeline.
Ask about immigration support during offer negotiation
Once you receive an offer, ask HR directly whether the role is eligible for H-1B or TN sponsorship at conversion. Nonprofits like IRC sometimes have cap-exempt H-1B status through affiliations, which bypasses the annual lottery and significantly changes your planning timeline.
Use Migrate Mate to find open IRC HR internships
IRC posts HR intern roles across multiple portals and the listings move quickly. Search Migrate Mate to filter specifically for International Rescue Committee roles that flag visa sponsorship, so you're only spending time on positions where your status is already a fit.
Prepare documentation that reflects PERM-ready experience
If your goal is a sponsored full-time HR role after the internship, use the internship to build a documented work history with specific job duties. PERM requires precise role descriptions, so maintaining records of your responsibilities now strengthens any future labor certification filing.

Find Human Resources Intern at International Rescue Committee JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does International Rescue Committee sponsor H-1B visas for Human Resources Interns?
IRC has sponsored H-1B visas for roles across its HR function, though intern-level positions are more commonly filled under F-1 OPT or CPT. One important detail: as a nonprofit, IRC may qualify for cap-exempt H-1B filings, which means qualifying candidates can bypass the annual lottery. Confirm cap-exempt eligibility directly with IRC's HR team during the offer stage.
How do I apply for Human Resources Intern jobs at International Rescue Committee?
Applications go through IRC's careers portal at rescue.org. Roles are posted by location and program area, so filter for HR or People Operations internships in cities where IRC has established U.S. offices. Migrate Mate also aggregates IRC HR internship listings and flags which postings are open to visa sponsorship, making it easier to prioritize the right applications.
Which visa types are commonly used for Human Resources Intern roles at IRC?
F-1 CPT and F-1 OPT are the most common pathways for HR internships at IRC, since they require no employer-side filing and work within existing student status. For candidates already in the U.S. on J-1 exchange visitor programs, IRC can also serve as a designated sponsor. TN and H-1B sponsorship are more typical for full-time conversions than for initial internship roles.
What qualifications does IRC look for in Human Resources Intern candidates?
IRC typically looks for candidates pursuing degrees in human resources, organizational psychology, international development, or a related field. Practical experience with HRIS platforms, employee onboarding, or compliance documentation is valued. Given IRC's global workforce, candidates who speak a second language or have experience working in multicultural environments tend to stand out in the hiring process.
How do I plan my timeline if I need visa sponsorship for an IRC HR internship?
If you're on F-1 status, coordinate your CPT authorization with your DSO at least four weeks before your intended start date, since IRC will need confirmed work authorization to finalize onboarding. For OPT, apply to USCIS at least 90 days before your program end date. J-1 candidates should confirm IRC's sponsorship capacity before accepting an offer, as J-1 authorization requires a separate DS-2019 issuance.
