INTRODUCTION
The Team Platform Engineering is the department within SRE that is responsible for a range of critical infrastructure and operational functions that support the broader engineering organization. Among these are our multi-cloud-provider Kubernetes infrastructure, networking, load balancing (including our public-facing edge and internal service mesh), and observability and alerting systems. The Fleet Management team provides the core runtime environment that empowers our developers to build and ship products to delight our customers. We manage the end-to-end lifecycle of our Kubernetes fleet, alongside the critical components that ensure cluster reliability and security (e.g., CoreDNS, cert-manager, and Gatekeeper). As our infrastructure scales to support new use cases and products, we are spearheading a migration from Terraform-based Infrastructure as Code (IaC) to an Operator-driven lifecycle management model. This role can be based out of our Austin, Boston, Los Angeles, New York City, Raleigh, or San Francisco offices, or remotely in the United States region.
Responsibilities
- Manage a team of 6-8 engineers, fostering a positive culture, handling career growth and performance conversations, and proactively removing blockers
- Help develop a clear technical vision and comprehensive roadmap for our runtime environment, balancing long-term strategic infrastructure goals with immediate engineering needs
- Contribute through light hands-on technical work, such as leading architectural design reviews, reviewing PRs, and stepping in to guide the team through complex operational challenges
- Act as the primary liaison for the Fleet Management team, collaborating closely with other engineering leaders to ensure platform alignment and manage stakeholder expectations
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
You may be a good fit if you:
- Have 10+ years of experience working on software and operating distributed systems, with 2+ years managing engineering teams
- Possess a customer-focused mindset, treating internal developers as your primary users
- Value efficiency in processes and operations, and have a track record of optimizing team workflows
- Prefer automation over manual processes ("allergic to ops work"), fostering a culture of building software solutions to eliminate toil
- Have deep technical familiarity with Kubernetes ecosystems, containerization technologies, and modern IaC tooling (e.g., Terraform, Crossplane, or Operators) so you can effectively guide the team's technical decisions
- Excel at translating complex business and engineering requirements into actionable, phased technical roadmaps
- Have a high level of empathy, responsibility, ownership, and accountability
- Excellent verbal and written technical communication skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Strong candidates may also have experience with:
- Leading major architectural shifts, such as migrating teams from traditional IaC to Operator-driven lifecycle management
- Managing and scaling infrastructure across multi-cloud environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
- Designing secure, multi-tenant runtime environments at scale

Align your credentials to MongoDB's stack
MongoDB's Engineering Technician roles typically require hands-on experience with distributed systems, Linux environments, and cloud infrastructure. Before applying, audit your resume to surface specific tools like Kubernetes, AWS, or MongoDB Atlas that appear in their job postings.
Target MongoDB's enterprise engineering teams
MongoDB hires Engineering Technicians across its cloud and field engineering divisions, not just core product. Searching by team or department when filtering open roles helps you find postings where your infrastructure or support background directly matches what the hiring manager needs.
Clarify your visa category before the offer stage
MongoDB sponsors several visa types for Engineering Technician roles. Knowing whether you need H-1B, E-3, TN, or F-1 OPT before your final interview round lets you answer sponsorship questions confidently instead of stalling the offer process while you figure it out.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified MongoDB openings
Sponsorship eligibility varies by role and location, even within MongoDB. Use Migrate Mate to filter Engineering Technician jobs at MongoDB by the visa type you need, so you're only spending time on postings that match your work authorization situation.
Prepare your OPT timeline before MongoDB's hiring cycle
F-1 OPT authorization can take up to 90 days from USCIS. If you're targeting MongoDB's mid-year hiring cycle, file your EAD application early enough that your work authorization start date aligns with a realistic onboarding window, not after it.
Understand what PERM means for long-term sponsorship
MongoDB sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards for qualifying Engineering Technician roles, which requires a PERM labor certification filed with the DOL. Ask during the offer negotiation whether the role is eligible, since not every technician position meets the prevailing wage and recruitment requirements.

Find Engineering Technician at MongoDB JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does MongoDB sponsor H-1B visas for Engineering Technicians?
Yes, MongoDB sponsors H-1B visas for Engineering Technician roles. Because H-1B requires the position to qualify as a specialty occupation, MongoDB's Engineering Technician openings are structured around degree-level technical requirements in fields like computer science, electrical engineering, or information systems. Cap-subject petitions are filed in April for an October 1 start date, so your offer and I-129 filing must be timed accordingly.
How do I apply for Engineering Technician jobs at MongoDB?
Applications go through MongoDB's careers portal at mongodb.com/careers. Search for Engineering Technician postings filtered by team or location. Tailor your application to the specific infrastructure or systems scope described in each posting. You can also browse verified Engineering Technician openings at MongoDB by visa type on Migrate Mate, which surfaces roles matched to your work authorization needs.
Which visa types does MongoDB commonly use for Engineering Technician roles?
MongoDB sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards for Engineering Technician positions. E-3 applies to Australian citizens, TN to Canadian and Mexican nationals under USMCA. F-1 OPT and CPT cover students currently enrolled in or recently graduated from U.S. degree programs. The right category depends on your citizenship, degree level, and whether you need cap-subject or cap-exempt status.
What qualifications does MongoDB expect for Engineering Technician candidates?
MongoDB's Engineering Technician postings typically expect a bachelor's degree in a technical field such as computer science, electrical engineering, or a closely related discipline. Hands-on experience with cloud platforms, database administration, Linux systems, or network infrastructure is commonly required. Postings on the enterprise and cloud teams often add specific requirements around MongoDB Atlas, scripting, or customer-facing technical support experience.
How do I think about the sponsorship timeline when targeting MongoDB?
Timeline depends heavily on visa type. E-3 and TN can be secured in weeks, since both are processed at a U.S. consulate or port of entry without a lottery. H-1B cap-subject petitions require a full year of planning around the April registration window. OPT work authorization from USCIS takes up to 90 days, so aligning your application with MongoDB's hiring cycle requires filing well in advance of your intended start date.
