Obtain Colorado Special Education Licensure Early
Colorado requires a state-issued special education license before you can be hired. Start the Colorado Department of Education application well before your job search, since processing can take weeks and delays will stall any offer or visa filing timeline.
Align Your Specialty to High-Need Disability Categories
Poudre School District consistently posts openings across multiple disability areas. Targeting roles in autism spectrum, emotional disability, or low-incidence categories improves your chances, since these are among the hardest positions for districts to fill with domestic candidates.
Browse Open Roles Through Migrate Mate
Poudre School District lists multiple Special Education Teacher openings at any given time. Use Migrate Mate to filter PSD positions by visa sponsorship type so you can prioritize roles where H-1B or TN sponsorship has been confirmed before you invest time applying.
Confirm H-1B Sponsorship Willingness Before Interviewing
School districts vary in how proactively they discuss visa sponsorship. Ask PSD's HR team directly whether they will file an H-1B petition for your specific role before you reach the offer stage, not after, to avoid wasted time on both sides.
Understand the H-1B Cap-Exempt Advantage for School Districts
Public K-12 school districts are not cap-exempt employers, so H-1B filings for PSD positions are subject to the annual lottery. Time your applications so an approved petition or cap-gap coverage keeps you work-authorized through the typical August start date for teachers.
Prepare a Credential Equivalency Assessment for Foreign Degrees
If your special education degree was earned outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved organization before applying. Colorado's CDE and PSD's HR will both need documentation confirming your degree is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's in education or a related field.

Find Special Education Teacher at Poudre School District JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Poudre School District sponsor H-1B visas for Special Education Teachers?
Yes, Poudre School District has sponsored H-1B visas for Special Education Teachers. Because PSD is a public school district and not a cap-exempt employer, H-1B petitions for these roles go through the annual USCIS lottery. If you're pursuing this path, timing your application around the April lottery window and August school year start is critical.
Which visa types are commonly used for Special Education Teacher roles at Poudre School District?
H-1B is the most common employer-sponsored option for Special Education Teachers at PSD. TN status is available for Canadian and Mexican nationals whose credentials meet the teacher category requirements under USMCA. F-1 OPT and CPT are options for recent graduates completing practical training, though these are temporary and require a longer-term sponsorship plan before authorization expires.
What qualifications and experience does Poudre School District expect for Special Education Teacher roles?
PSD requires a valid Colorado special education teaching license and a bachelor's degree or higher in education or a related field. Practical experience working with students with disabilities is expected, and many postings specify a preferred disability area such as autism, emotional disability, or significant support needs. Fluency in Individualized Education Program development is also standard.
How do I apply for Special Education Teacher jobs at Poudre School District?
Applications go through PSD's official district careers portal. You'll need your Colorado teaching license, transcripts, and references ready before submitting. For visa sponsorship, flag your work authorization status early in the process and follow up with HR directly to confirm their sponsorship process. Migrate Mate lets you browse PSD's open Special Education Teacher roles filtered by sponsorship type before you apply.
How do I plan my timeline if I need visa sponsorship to work at Poudre School District?
Build your timeline around two fixed points: the USCIS H-1B lottery in April and PSD's teacher hiring cycle, which runs from January through spring for fall positions. Ideally, you secure an offer and have your H-1B petition filed before the April registration window. If you're on OPT, confirm your expiration date leaves enough runway to cover cap-gap if the petition is approved.
