Match your credentials to USMCA professions
TN admission at Appalachian State requires your role to appear on the USMCA professions list. Review O*NET occupation profiles for your target position before applying to confirm your degree field and job duties align precisely with a qualifying profession category.
Target academic and research departments directly
Appalachian State's strongest TN hiring concentrates in faculty, research scientist, and technical support roles. Reach out to specific departments in sciences, computer information systems, or engineering rather than applying exclusively through the central HR portal.
Request a detailed offer letter early
Appalachian State issues the support letter you'll present at the border or consulate. Ask HR explicitly to include your job title, USMCA profession category, start date, salary, and a statement of your professional qualifications to avoid delays at the port of entry.
Use Migrate Mate to verify TN employer history
Before investing time in your application, check Appalachian State's hiring record for your target role type. Migrate Mate surfaces employer-level data so you can confirm the university actively supports TN professionals in positions matching your background.
Prepare credential evaluations for non-U.S. degrees
Appalachian State's hiring teams evaluate whether your degree satisfies the specialty field requirement for TN admission. A credential evaluation from a recognized U.S. body strengthens your case when your degree title differs from standard American equivalents.
Time your border or consulate appointment strategically
Canadian nationals can seek TN admission at the port of entry the same day the offer letter is issued. Mexican nationals must schedule a consulate appointment in advance. Build at least four to six weeks of lead time into your start date to absorb potential delays.
Appalachian State University TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Appalachian State University sponsor TN visas?
Appalachian State University supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals hired into qualifying USMCA profession roles. The university issues an offer letter that you present at the port of entry or U.S. consulate. TN is treaty-based admission, so Appalachian State does not file a petition with USCIS on your behalf.
Which roles at Appalachian State University qualify for TN admission?
Roles that align with USMCA profession categories are eligible. At Appalachian State, this commonly includes faculty positions, research scientists, computer systems analysts, engineers, and accountants. Your specific job title and duties must map to a recognized USMCA profession, and your degree must correspond directly to that field.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a job offer from Appalachian State University?
Contact Appalachian State's HR or international services office to request a formal support letter. That letter should confirm your USMCA profession category, your qualifications, and your employment terms. Canadian nationals present it at a U.S. port of entry. Mexican nationals use it to apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate before traveling.
How long does it take to get TN status through Appalachian State University?
Canadian nationals admitted at the border can start work the same day if the officer approves TN status. Mexican nationals typically wait several weeks for a consulate appointment and visa issuance. Build buffer time into your start date negotiations. TN status is granted for up to three years and is renewable indefinitely while you remain employed in a qualifying role.
How do I find open TN-eligible jobs at Appalachian State University?
Search Appalachian State's careers portal filtering for roles in academic, research, and technical departments that match USMCA profession categories. Migrate Mate can help you identify which positions at the university align with TN-eligible occupations based on employer hiring data, so you can focus your applications on roles with a realistic path to TN admission.
How does TN visa admission work at Appalachian State University?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from Appalachian State University, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
