Match your credentials to USMCA professions
TN eligibility is defined by the USMCA professions list, not Columbia's hiring preferences. Before applying, verify your degree title and field align exactly with a listed profession, a mismatch at the border or consulate can result in denial regardless of the job offer.
Target Columbia's research and academic departments
Columbia's strongest TN hiring tends to cluster in research labs, scientific institutes, and faculty-adjacent roles where degree-specific professions like biologist, chemist, or computer systems analyst map cleanly onto USMCA categories. Prioritize departments with active grants and published faculty to find open positions.
Request an offer letter that names your USMCA profession
Columbia's HR team issues offer letters for TN candidates, but the letter must explicitly state your USMCA profession title, not just your job title. Confirm this detail before your border crossing or consulate appointment, since CBP and consular officers evaluate the letter against the profession list.
Search Columbia's TN-eligible postings on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters Columbia University job listings by visa type, so you can identify roles that align with TN-eligible professions without manually scanning hundreds of postings. Use it to shortlist positions before reaching out to Columbia's hiring managers or HR contacts.
Benchmark your salary against the prevailing wage early
While TN doesn't require a formal Labor Condition Application, Columbia's offer must reflect a legitimate wage for the role. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check prevailing wages for your profession and location before negotiating, so your offer is competitive and consistent with what CBP expects to see.
Prepare for Canadian border entry versus Mexican consulate routing
Canadian nationals can present their Columbia offer letter directly at a port of entry without a prior visa stamp, while Mexican nationals must schedule a consulate appointment through USCIS and the State Department. Build your start-date timeline around the correct pathway for your citizenship to avoid delays.
