Match your credentials to USMCA professions
Cornell hires across scientific, engineering, and academic disciplines, but TN status only covers specific USMCA-listed occupations. Cross-reference your degree and job title against that list before applying to confirm your role qualifies for TN admission at the border or consulate.
Target research and technical roles first
Cornell's research institutes and STEM departments generate the most consistent demand for TN professionals. Roles like computer engineer, systems analyst, and scientific technician align naturally with USMCA categories and appear regularly across Cornell's Ithaca and NYC Tech campuses.
Prepare a Canadian or Mexican credential package early
Cornell's HR team will issue an offer letter, but you're responsible for your own credential package at the port of entry or consulate. Have your degree transcripts, professional evaluations if needed, and the offer letter organized before your start date is finalized.
Use Migrate Mate to identify Cornell's active TN hiring
Cornell posts TN-eligible roles across multiple university systems and doesn't always flag visa eligibility explicitly. Migrate Mate surfaces Cornell's active TN-compatible job listings so you can focus your search on open roles where your USMCA occupation and degree genuinely fit.
Clarify the offer letter details before traveling
Cornell's offer letter must specify your job title, duties, salary, and employment duration in terms a CBP officer can evaluate against USMCA criteria. Ask HR to confirm the letter references your specific occupation category, since vague descriptions can cause delays at the port of entry.
Understand TN renewal timing within Cornell's HR cycle
TN status is granted in increments and must be renewed before it expires. Coordinate with Cornell's international employment team well ahead of your expiration date, since university HR cycles can run slower than private-sector timelines and you'll need an updated offer letter for each renewal.
Cornell University TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Cornell University sponsor TN visas?
Cornell University supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals in USMCA-listed occupations by issuing the offer letter you present at the border or U.S. consulate. There is no USCIS petition involved. Cornell's research, engineering, and technology departments generate the most consistent demand for TN-eligible professionals across its campuses.
Which departments at Cornell University typically hire TN professionals?
Cornell's College of Engineering, computing and information science programs, and research institutes hire most frequently in roles that align with USMCA occupations such as computer engineer, systems analyst, and scientific technician. Academic and administrative roles can also qualify if the position and your credentials match a recognized USMCA profession category.
How do I start the TN process once Cornell University extends an offer?
Once Cornell issues an offer letter, Canadians present it at a U.S. port of entry along with their degree credentials and receive TN admission from CBP the same day if approved. Mexican nationals apply at a U.S. consulate and attend a visa interview. Cornell's HR team coordinates the offer letter, but you manage the border or consulate appointment independently.
How long does the TN process take at Cornell University?
For Canadians, TN admission at the port of entry is typically same-day. Mexican nationals should allow several weeks for a consulate appointment and processing time. Cornell's internal HR steps, including issuing a compliant offer letter, can take one to three weeks, so factor that into your start date planning when negotiating your timeline with hiring managers.
How do I find TN-eligible jobs at Cornell University?
Cornell posts openings across its own careers portal and broader university job boards, but listings rarely specify TN eligibility. Migrate Mate filters for Cornell roles that align with USMCA occupation categories, saving you the manual work of matching job titles to the professions list. Confirm that your specific degree field supports your target role before applying.
How does TN visa admission work at Cornell University?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from Cornell University, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
