Target roles matching USMCA professions
FIU hires across education, research, and administration, but TN admission only covers occupations on the USMCA professions list. Cross-reference your target role against that list before applying. Positions like computer systems analyst, engineer, or scientific technician are common fits at a research university.
Align your degree field to the role
TN requires your degree to correspond directly to the occupation. At FIU, hiring managers in STEM and social science departments expect a clear match. A management information systems degree supporting a computer systems analyst role clears the bar; a general business degree typically does not.
Request the offer letter details early
FIU's HR or international faculty office issues the support letter you'll present at the border or consulate. Ask your hiring contact to confirm what documentation the university provides and how long it takes to prepare, so you can schedule your port-of-entry or consulate appointment without delays.
Check FIU's open roles on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters job listings by verified TN sponsorship history, so you can identify active FIU openings where TN admission is a realistic outcome. Search by occupation category to surface roles that align with both the USMCA professions list and your degree field.
Benchmark your salary against prevailing wage
While TN has no formal prevailing-wage certification requirement, FIU sets salaries within public university pay structures. Use the OFLC Wage Search to verify your offered wage against the local Miami-area rate for your occupation before accepting, so you can address any gaps during negotiation.
Prepare your credentials for port-of-entry review
Canadian nationals go directly to a U.S. port of entry with FIU's offer letter, your degree transcripts, and credential evaluation if your institution is outside North America. CBP officers assess qualification on the spot, so bring original documents rather than copies to avoid a secondary review.
Florida International University TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Florida International University sponsor TN visas?
FIU supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals hired into roles that fall under the USMCA professions list. The university issues a formal offer letter that you present at the border or consulate. There is no USCIS petition involved. Not every open role qualifies, so confirm your occupation is on the USMCA list before applying.
Which departments at FIU typically hire TN professionals?
STEM departments, engineering programs, computer science, and social science research units are the most common sources of TN-eligible roles at FIU. Faculty, postdoctoral, and research staff positions in these areas frequently map to USMCA occupations. Administrative roles in IT and finance occasionally qualify as well, depending on the specific position title and your credentials.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a job offer from FIU?
After FIU extends an offer, work with the university's HR or international staff office to obtain a formal support letter describing your role, the USMCA occupation category, and your qualifications. Canadian nationals then present this letter directly at a U.S. port of entry. Mexican nationals apply at a U.S. consulate. USCIS is not involved in either pathway.
How long does the TN process take at FIU?
For Canadians, admission at the port of entry is typically granted the same day, assuming the offer letter and supporting documents are in order. Mexican nationals applying at a U.S. consulate face timelines that vary by post, generally ranging from a few days to several weeks for interview scheduling. FIU's letter preparation time is an additional variable to plan around.
How do I find TN-eligible jobs at FIU?
Search FIU's careers portal filtered by department and role type, then cross-check each position against the USMCA professions list and your degree field. Migrate Mate surfaces FIU openings where TN admission is a documented outcome, helping you prioritize applications to roles that match both the occupation requirements and your specific credentials.
How does TN visa admission work at Florida International University?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from Florida International University, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
