Match your occupation to USMCA categories
TN admission is limited to specific professions listed under USMCA. Before applying to GWU, verify your role maps to a qualifying occupation using O*NET. Research administrators, computer systems analysts, and scientific roles at GWU commonly align with the list.
Target departments with recurring specialized hiring
GWU's research centers, policy institutes, and technology teams hire cyclically. Focus your applications on departments with active grant-funded projects, where specialized TN-eligible roles like economists or scientific technologists are most likely to appear on a predictable hiring timeline.
Request a precise offer letter early
GWU's offer letter must state your TN profession category, job duties, salary, and employment period. Ask HR to confirm the letter explicitly names your USMCA profession before you travel. A vague letter is the most common reason border officers deny TN admission.
Prepare credential documentation for your specific profession
Each USMCA profession has distinct credential requirements. Scientists need degrees; some management consultants need a baccalaureate plus experience letters. Assemble transcripts, licensure records, and experience documentation before GWU finalizes your start date to avoid delays at the port of entry.
Search verified TN employer history on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to identify which GWU departments have actively hired workers under treaty-based visas and understand the types of roles they fill. That hiring history helps you prioritize your outreach to teams already familiar with supporting TN candidates through the admissions process.
Align your entry timing with GWU's academic calendar
GWU's hiring peaks before fall and spring semesters. Plan your port-of-entry or consular appointment to land at least two weeks before your start date. USCIS is not involved in TN admission, so your timeline depends entirely on border or consulate appointment availability.
George Washington University TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does George Washington University sponsor TN visas?
Yes. GWU supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying USMCA professions. The university issues an offer letter that you present at a U.S. port of entry or consulate. GWU does not file a petition with USCIS, and no Labor Condition Application is required for TN status.
Which roles and departments at GWU typically support TN candidates?
TN-eligible roles at GWU tend to appear in research centers, information technology, policy institutes, and scientific departments. Common qualifying occupations include computer systems analysts, economists, scientific technologists, and certain academic researchers. Roles in general administration or student affairs rarely map to USMCA profession categories.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a GWU job offer?
Once GWU issues your offer letter, you proceed directly to a U.S. port of entry if you are Canadian, or schedule a consular appointment if you are Mexican. Bring your offer letter, credential documents, and passport. USCIS plays no role. Migrate Mate can help you confirm your documents align with your specific USMCA profession category before you travel.
How long does TN admission for a GWU position typically take?
Canadian nationals can receive TN admission on the same day at a land border or preclearance airport. Mexican nationals must schedule a consular visa appointment, which can take several weeks depending on availability. Either way, plan your entry well before your GWU start date to account for any delays.
Can I renew my TN status while continuing to work at GWU?
Yes. TN status is granted in increments and can be renewed indefinitely as long as you remain employed in a qualifying role at GWU. Renewals follow the same process as initial admission. You will need an updated offer letter from GWU confirming your continued employment and profession category each time you renew.
How does TN visa admission work at George Washington University?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from George Washington University, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
