Match your degree to USMCA job categories
TN eligibility turns on whether your role and degree align with a specific USMCA profession, not just your years of experience. Pull up O*NET to confirm your target job title falls within a qualifying occupation before you apply to HDR.
Target HDR's technical practice groups first
HDR's water, transportation, and federal services divisions hire most heavily for engineering and scientific roles that map cleanly to USMCA professions. Focusing your search on those practice areas raises your odds of landing a TN-eligible position.
Request a detailed offer letter before your border appointment
HDR's offer letter needs to specify your job title, the USMCA profession category, your intended start date, and the project or client you'll support. A vague letter is the most common reason Canadian nationals get delayed at the port of entry.
Use Migrate Mate to verify HDR's sponsorship track record
Before investing time in HDR's interview process, check Migrate Mate to see which roles and practice areas HDR has historically supported for work visa candidates. That context helps you frame your TN eligibility conversation with recruiters from the start.
Prepare credential documentation for complex degree situations
If your engineering or science degree is from a non-U.S. institution, bring a credential evaluation confirming it's equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree. CBP officers at the border have discretion, and documentation gaps in your academic record can stall admission.
Time your border crossing to avoid peak processing delays
TN admission at land ports of entry can take two to four hours during Monday morning and Friday afternoon rush periods. Scheduling your first crossing mid-week and mid-day, especially for a role starting on a critical project deadline, reduces the risk of a delayed start.
HDR TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does HDR sponsor TN visas?
HDR supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying USMCA professions, primarily across engineering, environmental science, and consulting roles. HDR doesn't file a petition with USCIS for TN workers. Instead, it issues an offer letter that you present at a U.S. port of entry or consulate to obtain TN status directly.
Which HDR departments typically hire TN professionals?
HDR's water resources, transportation, structural engineering, and federal services groups are the most active hiring areas for USMCA-eligible roles. Environmental scientists, civil engineers, and project management professionals in those divisions tend to hold positions that align with recognized TN occupation categories under USMCA.
How do I start the TN process after receiving an HDR offer?
Once HDR extends a written offer, confirm the letter specifies your USMCA profession category, project scope, and employment terms. Canadian nationals present that letter at a U.S. land port of entry or airport preclearance. Mexican nationals schedule a visa appointment at a U.S. consulate. No USCIS filing is involved in either process.
How long does TN admission take when starting at HDR?
Canadian nationals granted TN status at the border typically receive a decision the same day, though processing can take two to four hours. Mexican nationals applying at a consulate face appointment wait times that vary by location and season. Once admitted, TN status is granted in three-year increments with no statutory limit on renewals.
How do I find open TN-eligible roles at HDR?
Search HDR's careers page filtering by engineering, environmental, or consulting job families, then cross-reference each title against the USMCA professions list to confirm TN eligibility. Migrate Mate also surfaces HDR roles filtered by visa sponsorship history, which helps you prioritize positions where HDR has a clear track record supporting international hires.
How does TN visa admission work at HDR?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from HDR, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
