Match your degree to USMCA professions
TN eligibility at Iowa State depends on your role appearing on the USMCA professions list and your degree aligning with that occupation. Cross-reference your credentials against O*NET to confirm the occupational match before applying to any position.
Target research and faculty-track postings
Iowa State's strongest TN hiring sits in tenure-track faculty lines, postdoctoral research roles, and scientific specialist positions. These openings typically have defined credential requirements that map cleanly onto USMCA-eligible occupations, making the offer letter process more straightforward.
Request a TN support letter early
Once you receive a verbal offer, ask Iowa State's HR or international office to begin drafting the TN support letter immediately. Delays here compress your start date, so aligning on the letter's job duty language before your border appointment avoids last-minute revisions.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating salary
Iowa State sets compensation within university pay bands, but your offered salary must reflect the role's market rate. Run the OFLC Wage Search for your occupation and county to confirm the offer meets or exceeds the prevailing wage before you finalize the written offer.
Use Migrate Mate to find active TN openings
Identifying which Iowa State departments are actively hiring TN-eligible candidates takes time. Migrate Mate filters employer job data by visa type and hiring history, letting you surface relevant Iowa State postings without manually scanning every departmental job board.
Prepare border documents for Canadian nationals
Canadian TN candidates present their support letter, credential evidence, and proof of citizenship directly at a U.S. port of entry, with no prior USCIS filing required. Organize your degree transcripts, the Iowa State offer letter, and a resume covering your qualifying work history into one clear packet.
Iowa State University TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Iowa State University sponsor TN visas?
Iowa State University supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals by issuing offer letters for qualifying roles. Because TN is a treaty-based status under USMCA, the university doesn't file a petition with USCIS. Instead, you present Iowa State's offer letter and your credentials at the border or U.S. consulate to obtain TN status directly.
Which departments at Iowa State University typically hire TN candidates?
TN-eligible hiring at Iowa State is most active in research-intensive colleges, including engineering, agriculture and life sciences, and computer science. Faculty, postdoctoral researcher, and scientific specialist roles in these areas tend to map onto USMCA-recognized occupations. Administrative or general staff roles less frequently qualify under the professions list.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a job offer from Iowa State University?
After accepting an offer, work with Iowa State's international services office to obtain a TN support letter that describes your role, your qualifications, and the USMCA occupation category. Canadian nationals then present that letter at a U.S. port of entry. Mexican nationals schedule a visa appointment at a U.S. consulate. No USCIS petition is involved in either path.
How long does TN status take to obtain when working with Iowa State University?
For Canadian nationals, TN status is granted at the border on the day of entry, assuming documents are in order, so the timeline depends mainly on how quickly Iowa State can finalize your offer letter. Mexican nationals face consulate wait times that vary by location and season. Building in extra lead time before your intended start date reduces scheduling pressure.
How do I find TN-eligible job openings at Iowa State University?
Iowa State posts openings through its central HR portal, but not all listings specify visa eligibility. Migrate Mate filters jobs by employer and visa type, making it faster to identify Iowa State postings that align with TN-qualifying occupations. Cross-check any role against the USMCA professions list and your degree field before applying.
How does TN visa admission work at Iowa State University?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from Iowa State University, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
