Purpose
The Postdoctoral Research Associate in AI/Machine Learning (AI/ML) will lead advanced analytical, AI/ML, and data science components of a USDA-funded forest farming project. The position will develop and apply state-of-the-art AI/ML methods to survey data to improve understanding of farmer behavior, forest farming adoption, and network development, and will contribute to capacity-building, and outreach activities that strengthen data-driven forest farming and agroforestry decision-making at Lincoln University and across Missouri.
Essential Job Functions, Duties, & Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and validate machine learning models (random forests, support vector machines, neural networks) for survey nonresponse, response propensity estimation, and weighting adjustments using statewide farmer, landowner, and stakeholder survey data.
- Build AI/Natural Language Processing (NLP) pipelines (including large language models) to analyze open-ended survey and focus group data and predict farmer knowledge, attitudes, and adoption willingness.
- Apply multivariate and dimensionality-reduction techniques (PCA, Kernel-PCA, feature selection) to complex, mixed-type datasets.
- Integrate quantitative survey data (Likert-scale, categorical, and continuous variables) with qualitative and text-derived features to build predictive models of forest farming adoption, perceived barriers, and support needs among socially disadvantaged and resource-limited farmers.
- Translate analytical findings into outreach strategies, educational materials, economic analysis inputs, and policy recommendations.
- Prepare technical documentation, reproducible pipelines, and interpretation reports for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Develop and deliver educational modules, short courses, and training materials on AI/ML, data science, and cloud-based analytics (Google Cloud, no-code ML tools) for non-coding students, extension professionals, and farmers, with a strong emphasis on agriculture- and agroforestry-relevant applications.
- Contribute to evaluation metrics and grant deliverables (reports, model portfolios, AI/NLP frameworks, outreach summaries, policy documents).
- Lead or co-author peer-reviewed papers, conference presentations, and extension publications.
- Mentor graduate and undergraduate students on survey, qualitative, and data science tasks.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Statistics, Data Science, Agricultural or Environmental Data Science, Quantitative Social Science, or a closely related field.
- Experience in developing and applying machine learning models (such as random forests, support vector machines, and neural networks) to empirical datasets.
- Experience with handling survey or social science data (e.g., Likert scales, categorical responses, mixed methods) and performing statistical modeling or ML-based analysis.
- Demonstrated competence in at least one major programming language used for data science (R or Python) and in statistical/ML software workflows.
- Record of peer-reviewed publications.
- Eligibility to work in the United States for the duration of the appointment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior research experience in agriculture, forestry, agroforestry, environmental science, or related fields, especially projects involving farmers or landowners.
- Experience applying AI/ML methods to survey data for nonresponse adjustment, propensity weighting, or behavioral prediction.
- Background in NLP or text analytics, including work with open-ended survey responses, interviews, or focus group transcripts.
- Experience designing or delivering educational content on AI/ML, data science, or cloud computing (e.g., short courses, workshops, online modules) for non-coding or mixed-expertise audiences.
- Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (Google Cloud, AWS) for data analysis and ML model deployment, including use of no-code or low-code tools and AutoML services.
- Demonstrated interest or experience in community-engaged scholarship, extension, or citizen science, especially with underserved or socially disadvantaged farming populations.

This position will work primarily in an office environment. Occasional travel may be required for project meetings, workshops, field days, or outreach events at Lincoln University facilities, partner institutions, and community sites across Missouri.

Target faculty and research roles first
Lincoln University's TN hires concentrate in academic and research departments. Professors, scientific researchers, and computer systems analysts appear most frequently in education-sector TN admissions. Focusing your search on tenure-track, adjunct, or research positions gives you the strongest footing for a qualifying offer letter.
Verify your occupation fits USMCA
Not every role Lincoln University posts qualifies for TN. Cross-reference your job title against the USMCA professions list before applying. O*NET can help you confirm whether your occupation's standard definition aligns with a listed category, which matters when the CBP officer reviews your documentation at the border.
Confirm your credential meets the standard
Lincoln University will expect your degree to match the specialty of the role you're filling. Canadian and Mexican nationals need a qualifying degree or relevant professional certification. If your credentials were issued outside North America, get an evaluation completed before the hiring process advances to the offer letter stage.
Use Migrate Mate to find active TN openings
Searching broadly across job boards wastes time on employers unfamiliar with TN admission. Migrate Mate filters for employers that actively support TN candidates, so you can focus your applications on Lincoln University roles where the hiring team already understands the offer letter process and USMCA requirements.
Ask HR explicitly about the offer letter
Lincoln University does not file a petition on your behalf. The offer letter it provides is what you present at the port of entry or U.S. consulate. Confirm during the hiring process that HR can issue a letter specifying your role, qualifying credentials, and USMCA profession category before you accept the position.
Prepare your border documentation carefully
Canadian nationals seek TN admission directly at a port of entry; Mexican nationals apply at a U.S. consulate. Either way, bring your Lincoln University offer letter, credential documents, and any supporting materials that confirm the specialty occupation. CBP officers make the admissibility determination on the spot, so completeness matters.
Lincoln University of Missouri TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Lincoln University of Missouri sponsor TN visas?
Yes. Lincoln University of Missouri supports TN admission by issuing offer letters for eligible Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying USMCA occupations. Because TN is treaty-based admission rather than an employer petition, the university's role is to provide documentation confirming the role, your credentials, and the applicable USMCA profession category.
Which roles and departments at Lincoln University typically qualify for TN admission?
Faculty positions in sciences, agriculture, business, and the humanities are the most common TN-eligible roles at Lincoln University. Computer systems analysts and scientific researchers in academic or extension programs also appear regularly. Roles that require a degree directly tied to the job function and listed under USMCA are the strongest candidates.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a Lincoln University offer?
Once Lincoln University issues your offer letter specifying your USMCA profession, Canadian nationals present it along with their credentials directly at a U.S. port of entry. Mexican nationals schedule a nonimmigrant visa appointment at a U.S. consulate. There is no USCIS petition and no waiting period for an approval before you travel.
How long does TN admission at Lincoln University take compared to H-1B?
TN admission is significantly faster than H-1B visa. Canadian nationals can receive admission the same day at the border. Mexican nationals typically wait for a consular appointment, which varies by location and season. Neither route involves USCIS processing times or a lottery, making TN a predictable timeline for academic hires at Lincoln University.
How do I find open TN-eligible positions at Lincoln University of Missouri?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to identify Lincoln University of Missouri roles that align with TN admission, filtering for positions where the employer actively supports TN candidates. You can also monitor Lincoln University's official careers page and filter postings by academic department, prioritizing roles that match your USMCA occupation category and degree field.
How does TN visa admission work at Lincoln University of Missouri?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from Lincoln University of Missouri, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
