Target research and faculty support roles
Northwestern's strongest TN hiring sits in research-intensive departments, labs, and academic support functions. Focus your search on roles in sciences, engineering, and computer science, where USMCA-qualifying occupations like Scientific Technician and Computer Systems Analyst map cleanly to posted positions.
Confirm your occupation matches USMCA exactly
TN eligibility depends on your role matching a specific USMCA profession, not just your degree field. Cross-check the job description against O*NET to identify the correct occupational category before applying, so your qualifications and duties align with what Northwestern will document in your offer letter.
Request a TN-specific offer letter early
Northwestern's HR and international offices issue offer letters tailored for TN admission. Ask explicitly during the offer stage for a letter that states your USMCA occupation title, degree requirement, employment start date, and that the position is temporary, since border officers and consulates require each of these details.
Prepare credential documentation before your border appointment
Canadian nationals enter at a port of entry without a consulate step, but officers will scrutinize degree equivalency. Gather official transcripts, a degree certificate, and any credential evaluation confirming your qualification matches the USMCA profession Northwestern listed in your offer letter.
Use Migrate Mate to identify Northwestern's active TN roles
Before applying broadly, verify which departments at Northwestern are currently hiring for TN-eligible positions. Migrate Mate filters job listings by employer TN sponsorship history, so you can focus your applications on roles where Northwestern has an active hiring pattern for USMCA professionals.
Align your salary expectation with OFLC prevailing wages
Northwestern must pay TN workers the prevailing wage for the occupation and location under DOL standards. Look up the wage level for your USMCA occupation in Evanston or Chicago using the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating, so your offer isn't below the threshold that would complicate your admission.
Northwestern University TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Northwestern University sponsor TN visas?
Yes. Northwestern University supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals by issuing offer letters for qualifying USMCA-listed roles. Because TN is a treaty-based status, Northwestern doesn't file a petition or LCA on your behalf. You present the offer letter at a U.S. port of entry if Canadian, or at a U.S. consulate if Mexican.
Which roles at Northwestern University typically qualify for TN status?
TN-eligible roles at Northwestern tend to concentrate in research labs, academic departments, and scientific or technical support functions. Occupations such as Scientific Technician, Computer Systems Analyst, Biochemist, and Mathematician appear frequently in higher education TN hiring. Your role must match a specific USMCA profession, so confirm the occupational category with Northwestern's HR before accepting an offer.
How does the TN process work once Northwestern extends an offer?
Northwestern's Office of Human Resources and international services office will prepare an offer letter detailing your USMCA occupation title, required degree, and employment period. Canadian nationals bring that letter to a land border or preclearance airport and request TN admission directly. Mexican nationals apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate using the same documentation before traveling.
How long does TN admission at Northwestern University take?
For Canadian nationals, admission is typically granted at the border on the same day, assuming documentation is complete. Mexican nationals need to schedule a consulate appointment, which adds weeks depending on post-specific wait times. Northwestern's offer letter must be in hand before either step, so factor in the institution's internal HR processing time when planning your start date.
How do I find open TN-eligible jobs at Northwestern University?
Start by searching Northwestern's careers portal and filtering for research, technical, and academic roles. Migrate Mate can narrow your search further by surfacing Northwestern positions in occupations with documented TN sponsorship history, so you spend time on roles where the institution regularly supports USMCA professionals rather than positions that rarely lead to TN admission.
How does TN visa admission work at Northwestern University?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from Northwestern University, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
