Match your degree to USMCA professions
TN eligibility at Oakland University depends on your role appearing on the USMCA professions list and your degree directly matching that occupation. Cross-reference your field of study against the list using O*NET before applying to any specific posting.
Target departments with recurring TN hires
Oakland University's science, engineering, and social sciences departments have consistent demand for TN-eligible roles. Focus your applications on faculty, postdoctoral, and research staff positions in those units, where TN-qualifying specialty occupations are a natural fit.
Request the offer letter early in negotiations
Your TN admission at the border or consulate depends entirely on Oakland University's offer letter. Ask HR during the offer stage to specify your USMCA occupation title, start date, and employment terms in writing before you schedule any travel or port-of-entry appointment.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified TN openings
Searching for open roles at Oakland University that actually support TN admission is faster on Migrate Mate, which filters postings by verified sponsorship history. Start there to avoid applying to positions where TN isn't an established hiring pathway in that department.
Prepare for port-of-entry documentation requirements
Canadian TN candidates present their offer letter, credentials, and supporting documents directly to a CBP officer. Bring your degree transcripts, professional license if applicable, and the signed Oakland University offer letter. Gaps in documentation are the most common reason for delays at the port.
Confirm prevailing wage alignment before accepting
Unlike H-1B visa, TN doesn't require a formal wage certification, but your offered salary should align with wage levels for your occupation and location. Run a check using the OFLC Wage Search and the Bureau of Labor Statistics to confirm Oakland University's offer is competitive for the role.
Oakland University TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Oakland University sponsor TN visas?
Yes. Oakland University supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals by issuing the required offer letter for qualifying roles. The university does not file a petition with USCIS for TN candidates. Instead, you present the offer letter and your credentials directly at a port of entry or U.S. consulate to obtain TN status.
Which roles and departments at Oakland University typically support TN admission?
TN-eligible roles at Oakland University are most common in faculty and research positions across engineering, computer science, mathematics, and social sciences. Administrative and clinical roles tied to the university's health sciences programs can also qualify if the occupation appears on the USMCA professions list and your degree matches the role directly.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a job offer from Oakland University?
Ask HR to issue a formal offer letter that specifies your USMCA occupation title, intended start date, and employment terms. Canadian nationals present this letter at a port of entry along with their credentials and degree documents. Mexican nationals apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate before traveling. USCIS is not involved in either pathway.
How long does TN status last and how do I extend it at Oakland University?
TN status is granted in increments of up to three years and can be renewed indefinitely as long as you maintain qualifying employment. Oakland University issues a new or extended offer letter for renewals. Canadian nationals can re-enter at the border to renew, while Mexican nationals return to a consulate. There is no limit on the number of TN renewal periods.
How do I find current TN-eligible job openings at Oakland University?
Start your search on Migrate Mate, which surfaces Oakland University postings filtered by verified sponsorship history so you're applying to roles where TN admission is a recognized pathway. You can also search Oakland University's official careers portal directly, but confirm with HR during screening that your specific occupation qualifies under USMCA before investing significant time in the process.
How does TN visa admission work at Oakland University?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from Oakland University, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
