Match your credentials to USMCA professions
TN admission at Penn State requires your role to appear on the USMCA professions list. Cross-reference your target job title against O*NET occupation profiles to confirm the degree requirement and professional category align before applying, since a mismatch at the border will result in a denial.
Target departments that hire specialists
Penn State's research centers, engineering colleges, and health sciences programs regularly fill specialist roles in fields like computer science, life sciences, and accounting. Focus your search on departments running active grant-funded projects, where TN-eligible positions tend to open more frequently than in general administrative units.
Request a detailed offer letter early
Penn State's HR or international staff support unit issues the offer letter you'll present at the port of entry or consulate. Ask for it to specify your job title using USMCA profession language, your degree requirement, and your start date, since border officers scrutinize every detail of this document.
Verify your wage against prevailing rates
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your occupation and the State College or Philadelphia area before negotiating your offer. Penn State salaries for TN roles must meet or exceed this figure, and confirming it yourself lets you catch discrepancies before your admission attempt.
Search Migrate Mate for active Penn State roles
Filtering Penn State University job listings by TN-eligible occupation categories saves significant time. Migrate Mate surfaces roles at Penn State that align with USMCA professions, so you can identify which departments are actively hiring rather than manually sifting through the university's general careers portal.
Prepare your degree credentials for border review
Canadian nationals entering at a land port or pre-clearance airport must present original academic credentials, not copies. If your degree is from a non-U.S. or non-Canadian institution, obtain a credential evaluation from a recognized evaluator before your admission date, since Penn State cannot intervene if a border officer questions your qualifications.
Penn State University TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Penn State University sponsor TN visas?
Penn State University supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals hired into roles that qualify under the USMCA professions list. Penn State does not file a petition with USCIS. Instead, Penn State HR issues a support offer letter that the candidate presents at the border or U.S. consulate to obtain TN status directly. Roles in engineering, computer science, research, and health sciences are among those that regularly qualify.
Which Penn State departments typically hire TN professionals?
Penn State's colleges of engineering, information sciences and technology, and health and human development, along with its research institutes, are among the departments that most consistently fill roles in USMCA-listed professions. Faculty and research positions in life sciences, mathematics, and computer science align well with TN categories. Administrative or support roles that don't require a specific professional degree are less likely to qualify.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a Penn State offer?
Once Penn State extends a written offer, contact the relevant HR or international services office to request a TN support letter. That letter should confirm your job title using USMCA profession language, your qualifying degree requirement, your compensation, and your proposed start date. Canadian nationals then present it at a port of entry; Mexican nationals apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. USCIS is not involved in either path.
How long does TN admission for a Penn State role typically take?
Canadian nationals can obtain TN status on the same day at a land port of entry or airport pre-clearance, assuming all documents are in order. Mexican nationals must schedule a consular interview, which can take several weeks depending on appointment availability at their nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Penn State's internal offer letter preparation timeline varies by department, so confirm that timeline with HR before setting a start date.
How do I find open TN-eligible jobs at Penn State University?
Search Penn State's careers portal filtering by professional or research job families, then cross-reference each title against the USMCA professions list to confirm TN eligibility before applying. Migrate Mate also surfaces Penn State roles filtered by TN-compatible occupation categories, which reduces the time spent manually reviewing postings. Prioritize positions that explicitly list a required degree in a specific field, since those map most cleanly to USMCA profession requirements.
How does TN visa admission work at Penn State University?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from Penn State University, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
