Match your credentials to USMCA professions
TN admission covers a fixed list of professions under USMCA, not arbitrary roles. Cross-reference your degree and job title against the official USMCA professions list before applying. At PSU, roles in engineering, computer science, and social science typically align cleanly.
Target departments with recurring professional hires
PSU's engineering, computer science, and social work departments regularly hire professionals in TN-eligible occupations. Search PSU's careers portal filtering by faculty, research, and professional staff, these postings signal departments comfortable issuing TN support letters for qualifying candidates.
Request a formal offer letter before the border
PSU's HR or international services office issues the offer letter you'll present at the port of entry or U.S. consulate. Confirm the letter specifies your job title, duties, degree requirement, employer address, and employment period, CBP officers scrutinize every one of those details.
Verify your wage meets prevailing wage standards
Even though TN doesn't require an LCA, PSU must pay you at least the prevailing wage for your occupation and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the wage level for your role in Portland before negotiating your offer so you know what to expect.
Search PSU's TN-eligible openings on Migrate Mate
Filter PSU job listings on Migrate Mate by TN visa to surface roles in occupations that qualify under USMCA. Seeing which departments post TN-eligible positions helps you target your application before reaching out to PSU's international services team.
Prepare your degree credential documentation carefully
CBP requires proof your degree directly relates to the TN occupation. If your credential is from outside North America or your degree title doesn't obviously match your role, get a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization before your border or consulate appointment.
Portland State University TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Portland State University sponsor TN visas?
Yes. Portland State University supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals hired into roles that fall within USMCA-listed professions. PSU's HR and international services teams issue the offer letter you'll present at the port of entry or U.S. consulate. There's no USCIS petition involved, eligibility is determined at the border or consulate.
Which roles and departments at PSU typically support TN admission?
Roles in engineering, computer science, mathematics, social work, and the natural sciences are the most common TN-eligible positions at PSU. Faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and professional staff positions within these disciplines align with USMCA professions. Administrative roles outside these fields are less likely to qualify, so confirm your specific job title against the USMCA list before applying.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a PSU offer?
Once PSU issues a formal offer letter, Canadians can proceed directly to a U.S. port of entry with the letter, their degree credentials, and TN fee payment. Mexican nationals apply at a U.S. consulate. PSU's international services office coordinates the letter and can clarify what documentation CBP or the consulate will expect for your specific occupation.
How long does TN admission take at Portland State University?
For Canadian nationals, TN admission is typically granted same-day at the port of entry if documentation is complete. Mexican nationals applying at a U.S. consulate face standard nonimmigrant visa processing timelines, which vary by location. PSU issues the offer letter after your hire is finalized, so internal onboarding steps drive most of the pre-border timeline.
How do I find open TN-eligible jobs at Portland State University?
Migrate Mate lets you filter PSU job listings by TN visa status, so you can identify which open roles fall within USMCA-listed professions before applying. You can also search PSU's careers portal directly and cross-reference each job title against O*NET and the USMCA professions list to confirm eligibility before contacting PSU's international services team.
How does TN visa admission work at Portland State University?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from Portland State University, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
