Job Title: Assoc./Full Professor of Engineering Practice for Executive MS in AI Engineering Leadership Program
Job Summary
Purdue University’s College of Engineering invites applications for a Professor of Engineering Practice (PEP) position at the Associate/Full level in the Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering with a rare opportunity: to help build a new graduate program from the ground up. We seek exceptional candidates with deep experience in (a) one or more technical areas including Artificial Intelligence, Physical AI, the AI Tech Stack, advanced computing, AND (b) technical organizational leadership and management, who are excited by the challenge of launching and shaping something entirely new.
A Professor of Practice is a non-tenure-track faculty member with extensive real-world professional experience, bringing industry expertise to the classroom. The successful candidate will be both a founding faculty member and the inaugural Program Director for Purdue’s new Executive MS in AI Engineering Leadership, a forward-leaning program designed to prepare mid-career engineers and technology professionals not only to understand advanced technologies, but to lead people, organizations, and innovation efforts in an accelerating AI-driven world. Students will choose between two high-demand tracks: Physical AI and the AI Tech Stack.
Based in Silicon Valley at Playground Global in Palo Alto, California, the program is anchored in online instruction, with optional in-person enrichment and experiential opportunities in Palo Alto designed to extend learning beyond the virtual classroom. These activities may include workshops, guest lectures, networking events, site visits and other immersive experiences, bringing together Purdue’s engineering excellence, cutting-edge industry expertise, and the energy of the world’s most influential technology ecosystem. This role offers the chance to work closely with tech leaders, shape curriculum, and develop experiences that reflect real-world AI innovation organizational leadership, and the management capabilities required to guide technical teams and enterprises.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Teach graduate-level courses in the Executive MS in AI Engineering Leadership program, spanning technical foundations and organizational leadership topics.
- Serve as the inaugural Program Director, providing academic and strategic leadership for the program.
- Lead the development and continuous refinement of curriculum across the Physical AI and AI Tech Stack tracks, ensuring alignment with industry needs and emerging technologies.
- Build and maintain partnerships with industry leaders, alumni, and external stakeholders, particularly within the Silicon Valley ecosystem.
- Initiate and guide programmatic activities that enhance student learning, professional development, and industry engagement.
- Mentor students and emerging leaders, drawing on professional experience to support career growth and leadership development.
We are looking for someone with a PhD degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or a related discipline, or an MS degree in any of the above-mentioned disciplines plus a minimum of 10 years of experience along with extensive professional networks in one or more of the following technical areas: physical AI, AI infrastructure, and robotics and autonomy industries, by the employment start date. While deep technical expertise in AI is not required, the successful candidate must have significant organizational leadership and management experience, including leading technical teams, shaping organizational strategy, developing talent, and delivering products or programs at scale. This is a position for a builder—someone who thrives in dynamic environments, understands the complexities of managing technical organizations, and sees opportunity in the space between academia and industry.
Application Process

With four disciplines ranked in the top four and nine in the top ten (U.S. News & World Report), and the nation’s #2 online graduate engineering program, Purdue is expanding that excellence to meet the moment in AI and leadership development.

Map your degree to USMCA professions
TN eligibility depends on your occupation appearing on the USMCA professions list and your degree matching that field directly. Use O*NET to confirm your role's standard education requirements before applying to Purdue University positions, since a misaligned degree disqualifies you at the border regardless of experience.
Target Purdue's research and STEM departments
Purdue's strongest TN hiring sits in engineering, computer science, agriculture, and life sciences. Focus your job search on research faculty, postdoctoral, and technical staff roles in these departments, where TN-qualifying occupations like engineer, scientist, and computer systems analyst appear most consistently in active postings.
Request a detailed offer letter early
Purdue University's offer letter must specify your job title, duties, salary, and employment period in terms that match a recognized USMCA profession. Ask your hiring contact to confirm the letter uses the exact occupation title, since a vague description of duties is the most common reason TN admission gets questioned at the port of entry.
Prepare credential documents before your interview
Border officers and consular officials can request transcripts, professional licenses, or degree evaluations during TN admission. Have certified copies of your academic credentials ready before your Purdue start date, particularly if your degree was issued outside Canada or Mexico, where equivalency questions arise more frequently.
Search verified TN employer history on Migrate Mate
Before applying, use Migrate Mate to review Purdue University's sponsorship history by occupation and department. Seeing which TN-qualifying roles Purdue has actively supported helps you prioritize applications to teams with established processes for onboarding international professionals rather than those encountering it for the first time.
Confirm Canadian vs. Mexican entry procedures
Canadian nationals present TN documentation directly at a U.S. port of entry without a prior visa appointment. Mexican nationals must apply at a U.S. consulate and receive a TN visa stamp before traveling. Confirm which process applies to you well before your Purdue University start date to avoid last-minute scheduling delays.
Purdue University TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Purdue University sponsor TN visas?
Purdue University supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals by issuing the offer letter required at the border or consulate. Because TN is treaty-based admission rather than an employer-filed petition, Purdue's role is to provide documentation confirming your role, duties, and salary rather than filing anything with USCIS on your behalf.
Which roles at Purdue University qualify for TN status?
TN-eligible roles at Purdue are limited to occupations on the USMCA professions list. In practice, this includes engineers, computer systems analysts, scientific researchers, mathematicians, and university-level academics. Roles in Purdue's engineering, computer science, agriculture, and life sciences departments align most closely with recognized TN professions and see the most consistent activity.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a Purdue job offer?
Once Purdue extends an offer, work with the hiring department and Purdue's international office to obtain a formal offer letter that specifies your occupation, duties, salary, and employment period. Canadian nationals then present this letter at a U.S. port of entry. Mexican nationals use it to apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate before traveling.
How long does TN admission take for Purdue University hires?
Canadian nationals crossing at the border can typically complete TN admission in a few hours if documentation is complete. Mexican nationals face variable consular appointment wait times that can range from days to several weeks depending on the post. Purdue's international office can advise on timing, but build buffer into your start date to account for consular scheduling.
How do I find open TN-eligible positions at Purdue University?
Search Purdue University's careers portal filtering for roles in STEM, research, and technical departments where USMCA-listed occupations appear most frequently. Migrate Mate also surfaces Purdue's verified sponsorship history by occupation, so you can target departments with a track record of supporting TN professionals rather than applying broadly across the university.
How does TN visa admission work at Purdue University?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from Purdue University, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
