Match your credentials to USMCA professions
TN eligibility at Sam Houston State University depends on your occupation appearing on the USMCA professions list. Cross-reference your degree field against that list before applying, since roles like engineer, scientist, or social worker have specific credential requirements that HR will verify.
Target departments with STEM or research hiring
Sam Houston State University's science, criminal justice, and research departments regularly hire professionals in TN-eligible occupations. Focusing your search on faculty, research coordinator, and lab-based postings increases your odds of landing a role that maps cleanly to USMCA profession categories.
Request a detailed offer letter from HR
The offer letter Sam Houston State University provides is your primary TN document at the border or consulate. Ask HR to specify your job title using USMCA profession language, your degree requirement, your work location, and your employment start date to avoid officer questions.
Benchmark your salary against OFLC Wage Search
Before accepting an offer, look up your occupation's prevailing wage using OFLC Wage Search. While TN has no formal wage requirement like H-1B visa, a salary aligned with regional education-sector norms strengthens your case that the role is legitimate specialty employment at Sam Houston State University.
Use Migrate Mate to find open TN roles faster

Prepare your O*NET occupation profile before the border

Sam Houston State University TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Sam Houston State University sponsor TN visas?
Yes, Sam Houston State University supports TN admission for qualified Canadian and Mexican nationals. The university issues offer letters for roles that fall within the USMCA professions list, including positions in sciences, engineering, and social sciences. You present that letter at a port of entry or U.S. consulate, not through a USCIS petition process.
Which roles at Sam Houston State University typically qualify for TN admission?
Departments in criminal justice, biological sciences, computer science, and mathematics tend to post roles that align with USMCA-listed professions. Faculty positions, research coordinators, and certain administrative roles with specialized degree requirements are common TN-eligible categories. Your specific job title and required credentials must match an occupation on the USMCA professions list to qualify.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a Sam Houston State University offer?
Once you have a written offer, contact Sam Houston State University's HR or international services office to request a formal support letter. That letter should describe your role, required qualifications, and employment terms using USMCA profession language. Canadian nationals then present it at a port of entry; Mexican nationals apply at a U.S. consulate abroad.
How long does the TN process take at Sam Houston State University?
Canadian nationals can receive TN admission the same day at a port of entry if their documents are in order. Mexican nationals applying at a consulate typically wait one to four weeks depending on appointment availability. Neither pathway involves USCIS processing times, so there's no months-long petition queue to factor into your start date planning.
How do I find TN-eligible job openings at Sam Houston State University?
Start on Sam Houston State University's official careers portal and filter by department. Then verify each role maps to a USMCA-listed profession before applying. Migrate Mate surfaces TN-eligible postings by employer and visa type, which can help you quickly identify Sam Houston State University positions that match your occupation and credentials without reviewing every listing manually.
How does TN visa admission work at Sam Houston State University?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from Sam Houston State University, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
