Match your credentials to USMCA professions
TN eligibility depends on your role falling within the USMCA professions list, not just your degree. Cross-reference your exact job title against O*NET occupation codes to confirm the role qualifies before applying to any Texas State University posting.
Target faculty and research postings first
Texas State University's strongest TN hiring patterns sit in academic and research departments. Roles like scientist, engineer, or university lecturer map cleanly onto USMCA professions, so prioritize those job families when searching for positions that will support TN admission.
Request a detailed support letter from HR
Texas State University's HR team issues the offer letter you present at the border or consulate. Ask explicitly for your job title, duties, degree requirement, and employment duration to be stated clearly, since border officers assess TN eligibility from that letter alone.
Verify your wage against OFLC Wage Search
Although TN doesn't require a formal prevailing wage filing, your offered salary signals legitimacy to a border officer. Run your occupation and location through OFLC Wage Search before your appointment so you can confirm the offer is competitive if questioned.
Use Migrate Mate to identify TN-supporting roles
Searching Texas State University's open roles on Migrate Mate filters positions by TN sponsorship history, so you're not cold-applying to departments that don't support international candidates. Start there before submitting your application to save time in your job search.
Prepare for same-day admission as a Canadian
Canadian nationals don't need a visa stamp and can apply for TN status directly at a land border or pre-clearance airport. Bring your Texas State University offer letter, credential evidence, and a completed TN application package to avoid delays at the port of entry.
Texas State University TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Texas State University sponsor TN visas?
Texas State University supports TN admission for qualified Canadian and Mexican nationals by issuing offer letters for eligible roles. TN is treaty-based admission under USMCA, so there's no employer petition involved. You present the university's offer letter at a U.S. port of entry or consulate along with your own credentials to establish eligibility.
Which roles at Texas State University are typically eligible for TN admission?
Roles that align with the USMCA professions list are the ones to target. At Texas State University, that includes positions in education, scientific research, engineering, computer systems analysis, and accounting. Faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and certain administrative professionals in technical fields are the most common TN-supported hires at university employers like Texas State.
How do I start the TN process after receiving an offer from Texas State University?
Once you have a written offer, work with Texas State University's HR or international office to obtain a detailed support letter stating your job title, duties, required degree, and employment period. Canadians then apply directly at a port of entry. Mexican nationals apply at a U.S. consulate for a TN visa stamp before traveling. USCIS is not involved in either path.
How long does TN admission at Texas State University typically take?
For Canadian nationals, TN admission is typically granted the same day at the border if your documents are complete. Mexican nationals applying for a TN visa stamp at a consulate face appointment wait times that vary by location and season, often ranging from a few days to several weeks. Texas State University's offer letter doesn't affect that consular timeline.
How do I find open TN-eligible jobs at Texas State University?
Migrate Mate lists Texas State University roles filtered by visa sponsorship type, making it easier to identify positions where TN admission is supported. From there, confirm the specific job title appears on the USMCA professions list and that your degree aligns with the role before applying, since those two factors determine your TN eligibility at the border or consulate.
How does TN visa admission work at Texas State University?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from Texas State University, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
