Map your occupation to USMCA professions
Before applying, confirm your job title maps to a listed USMCA profession using O*NET. Iowa hires across engineering, scientific, and healthcare disciplines, but TN admission only covers specific occupations. Mismatched titles are the most common reason border officers deny entry.
Target Iowa's research and clinical departments
The University of Iowa's research centers and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics consistently hire for TN-eligible roles in life sciences, engineering, and healthcare. Focus your search on faculty, postdoctoral, and clinical specialist postings where degree requirements align directly with USMCA profession categories.
Request a detailed offer letter early
Iowa's HR team issues support letters, but you'll need the document to specify your occupation title, duties, qualifying degree, and employment period precisely. A vague letter creates problems at the port of entry. Ask for a draft before your border or consulate appointment so you can catch gaps.
Use Migrate Mate to verify Iowa's TN hiring history
Search Migrate Mate to see which roles and departments at the University of Iowa have supported TN professionals in the past. That data helps you prioritize openings where the hiring team is already familiar with TN admission requirements, shortening the offer process.
Prepare credential documentation for your degree field
TN admission requires your degree to match your USMCA occupation directly. If you hold a non-U.S. degree, gather official transcripts and a credential evaluation in advance. Iowa's academic and research roles often attract candidates with international credentials, so have your evaluation ready before the offer stage.
Understand TN duration and renewal before accepting
TN status is granted for up to three years and is renewable indefinitely, but each renewal requires a new employer support letter and a border or consulate presentation. Confirm with Iowa's HR team how they handle renewals for ongoing roles so you're not caught off guard when your initial period ends.
The University of Iowa TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does The University of Iowa sponsor TN visas?
Yes. The University of Iowa supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals in USMCA-eligible occupations. The university issues an offer letter documenting your role, duties, and qualifications. You then present that letter at a port of entry (if Canadian) or at a U.S. consulate (if Mexican) to obtain TN status. There is no USCIS petition involved.
Which roles and departments at The University of Iowa typically support TN admission?
TN-eligible hires at Iowa tend to concentrate in research, engineering, life sciences, and clinical healthcare, including University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Faculty, postdoctoral researchers, engineers, and clinical specialists in fields that map to USMCA profession categories are the most common recipients. Roles requiring a specific technical or scientific degree tend to qualify most cleanly.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a job offer from The University of Iowa?
After accepting an offer, work with Iowa's HR or international services office to obtain a detailed support letter confirming your occupation, duties, qualifying degree, and employment dates. Canadian nationals present this letter at a U.S. port of entry. Mexican nationals schedule a consular interview. USCIS is not involved, and no Labor Condition Application is required for TN.
How long does TN admission take when starting at The University of Iowa?
Canadians can receive TN admission the same day at most land ports of entry, provided all documents are in order. Mexican nationals must schedule a consular appointment, which adds weeks depending on post availability. The university's offer letter preparation timeline varies, so confirm with Iowa's HR team how far in advance they need to process your documentation.
How do I find open TN-eligible positions at The University of Iowa?
Search The University of Iowa's careers portal filtering for roles in engineering, research, healthcare, and scientific fields that require a specific degree. Migrate Mate also lets you search Iowa's hiring history by visa type, so you can identify departments with a track record of supporting TN professionals and prioritize applications where the process is already familiar to the hiring team.
How does TN visa admission work at The University of Iowa?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from The University of Iowa, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
