Match your degree to USMCA profession categories
The University of Michigan can only support TN admission for roles that appear on the USMCA professions list. Cross-reference your degree field against O*NET occupation profiles for your target role before applying, so your credentials clearly align with a qualifying category.
Target research and clinical departments directly
Michigan's strongest TN hiring concentrates in research labs, engineering departments, and health system units like Michigan Medicine. Search internal job boards by department rather than keyword alone, since TN-eligible roles are posted at the unit level, not flagged by visa type.
Request a detailed offer letter before the border
The University of Michigan's offer letter must specify your TN profession category, job duties, salary, and employment period. Canadian nationals present this letter directly at a port of entry, so any missing detail can result in a same-day refusal with no immediate appeal path.
Clarify renewal timing with your HR contact
TN status is granted in increments and must be renewed before expiration. Michigan's HR and international office can issue renewal support letters, but processing lead times vary by department. Confirm the internal timeline well before your current TN period ends to avoid a gap in work authorization.
Use Migrate Mate to verify Michigan's TN hiring patterns
Before applying, use Migrate Mate to review the types of roles and departments at Michigan where TN professionals have historically been placed. This lets you focus your application on teams that are already familiar with supporting TN admission rather than starting from scratch.
Confirm wage compliance using OFLC Wage Search
While TN does not require a Labor Condition Application, your offered salary should meet or exceed the prevailing wage for your occupation and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to verify this before negotiating your offer, since underpayment relative to local norms can raise questions at the border.
The University of Michigan TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does The University of Michigan sponsor TN visas?
The University of Michigan supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals by issuing offer letters for qualifying roles. TN is treaty-based admission under USMCA, so Michigan does not file a petition with USCIS. Instead, your department provides a support letter that you present at a port of entry or U.S. consulate.
Which roles and departments at The University of Michigan typically support TN admission?
TN-eligible hiring at Michigan is concentrated in research-intensive units, the College of Engineering, information technology services, and Michigan Medicine. Roles such as engineers, scientists, computer systems analysts, and certain healthcare professionals appear frequently. Eligibility depends on your specific occupation falling within the USMCA professions list, not the department's preference.
How do I start the TN admission process after receiving a Michigan job offer?
After accepting an offer, work with Michigan's HR or international services office to obtain a detailed support letter confirming your role, USMCA profession category, duties, salary, and employment period. Canadian nationals then present this letter with their credentials at a port of entry. Mexican nationals apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate before traveling.
How long does it take to be admitted in TN status when starting at The University of Michigan?
Canadian nationals can receive TN admission the same day at a port of entry if documents are complete. Mexican nationals must schedule a consular appointment, which adds several weeks to the timeline. Internal preparation at Michigan, including obtaining the offer letter and any department approvals, can take one to three weeks depending on the unit.
How do I find open TN-eligible positions at The University of Michigan?
Search Michigan's careers portal filtering by department or job family, since TN eligibility is not labeled directly on postings. Migrate Mate can help you identify the types of roles at Michigan where TN professionals have been placed, so you can prioritize applications to teams already experienced with supporting TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals.
How does TN visa admission work at The University of Michigan?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from The University of Michigan, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
