Match your credentials to USMCA requirements
UTHSC hires across nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, and research science roles. Before applying, confirm your specific degree and professional designation satisfy the USMCA professions list for your target role, since a mismatch at the border means immediate denial regardless of the offer letter.
Target departments with recurring TN hires
Clinical research, allied health sciences, and basic science faculty positions at UTHSC are the most consistent sources of TN-eligible roles. Filtering your job search to these departments narrows your options to positions where the institution has existing experience supporting TN admission documentation.
Request a detailed offer letter early
UTHSC's HR and international services office issues the offer letter you'll present at the border or consulate. Ask for it to explicitly state your job title, qualifying profession category, degree requirement, and employment start date. Vague letters generate secondary inspection and delay.
Use Migrate Mate to verify employer TN history
Before investing time in an application, confirm UTHSC has actively hired in your occupation category. Migrate Mate surfaces employer visa history so you can see which roles the institution has supported, helping you prioritize your outreach to the right departments and hiring managers.
Align your salary expectations with prevailing wage data
Academic medical centers like UTHSC set compensation through established pay bands. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your occupation in the Memphis metropolitan area before negotiating, so your offer reflects market standards and doesn't raise compliance questions during TN review.
Prepare for Canadian border vs. Mexican consulate differences
Canadian nationals can present their UTHSC offer letter directly at a U.S. port of entry for same-day TN admission. Mexican nationals must schedule a consular interview in advance, which adds weeks to the timeline. Build that lead time into your start date conversation with UTHSC's hiring team.
The University of Tennessee Health Science Center TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does The University of Tennessee Health Science Center sponsor TN visas?
Yes, UTHSC supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican professionals in qualifying roles. Rather than filing a petition, the institution issues an offer letter that you present at a U.S. port of entry or consulate. Eligible positions typically fall within clinical, research, pharmacy, and academic faculty functions that correspond to USMCA-listed professions.
Which roles at UTHSC typically qualify for TN admission?
Positions in nursing, pharmacy, physical and occupational therapy, medical laboratory science, and research faculty are the most common TN-qualifying roles at UTHSC. The role must correspond exactly to a profession enumerated on the USMCA list, and your degree must match the specific occupational requirement, not just be in a related field.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a UTHSC offer?
Once UTHSC's HR team prepares your offer letter, Canadian nationals proceed directly to a U.S. port of entry with the letter, passport, and supporting credentials. Mexican nationals schedule a nonimmigrant visa appointment at a U.S. consulate. In both cases, UTHSC does not file anything with USCIS; the admission decision is made at the border or consulate.
How long does TN admission typically take when starting at UTHSC?
Canadian nationals can receive TN admission the same day they appear at a port of entry, assuming all documents are in order. Mexican nationals should expect several weeks to secure a consular appointment and receive their visa stamp. Plan your UTHSC start date accordingly, and factor in any consulate backlog in your city of application.
How do I find open TN-eligible positions at UTHSC?
Search UTHSC's careers portal filtered by department areas like clinical research, allied health, and basic sciences. Migrate Mate also lists TN-eligible roles at academic medical institutions and surfaces UTHSC positions where the employer has a history of supporting international hires. Confirm the job description cites a degree requirement that matches your credentials before applying.
How does TN visa admission work at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from The University of Tennessee Health Science Center, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
