Align your credentials to USMCA professions
UT Austin hires across dozens of disciplines, but TN admission only covers specific USMCA-listed occupations. Cross-reference your job title and degree against the professions list before applying. Roles in engineering, computer science, and scientific research align most cleanly with USMCA categories at research universities.
Target departments with ongoing research funding
UT Austin's research centers and grant-funded labs hire TN professionals year-round, not just on academic hiring cycles. Positions in engineering, life sciences, and computer science under sponsored research units often have more flexibility to bring on TN candidates than standard faculty lines.
Request a detailed offer letter before your port of entry
UT Austin's HR or international faculty office issues the support letter you'll present at the border or consulate. Make sure it specifies your USMCA occupation category, your degree field, and the professional-level nature of the role. Vague letters are the most common reason for TN delays.
Verify your wage meets prevailing standards early
While TN doesn't require a Labor Condition Application, UT Austin positions still have salary bands. Use OFLC Wage Search to check that your offered salary meets the prevailing wage for your occupation and location. A gap here can complicate your admission even without a formal DOL filing.
Use Migrate Mate to identify UT Austin's sponsorship history
Before applying, search UT Austin's profile on Migrate Mate to see which visa types the university has supported across departments. This helps you target roles and teams where international hiring is already established, rather than educating a hiring manager on TN for the first time.
Prepare your O*NET occupation profile for the interview
Customs officers assess whether your role qualifies under USMCA based on its duties, not just its title. Pull your occupation's O*NET profile and highlight the degree-level requirements. For Canadian citizens presenting at the border, having this documentation ready can resolve officer questions on the spot.
The University Of Texas At Austin TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does The University Of Texas At Austin sponsor TN visas?
Yes. UT Austin supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican professionals in qualifying USMCA occupations. The university issues offer letters that you present at a port of entry or U.S. consulate. TN is not a petition-based process, so there's no USCIS filing from UT Austin's side. Eligible roles typically fall in engineering, computer science, research, and academic disciplines.
Which departments at UT Austin typically hire TN professionals?
Research-intensive units are the most active, including engineering, natural sciences, computer science, and applied research centers. These departments regularly hire professionals in roles that map to USMCA occupations like engineer, scientist, and computer systems analyst. Academic support and administrative roles are less likely to qualify unless they meet the professional-level degree requirements under USMCA.
How do I start the TN process at UT Austin after receiving a job offer?
Once UT Austin extends an offer, work with their HR or international services office to obtain a support letter confirming your USMCA occupation category, your duties, and your degree requirement. Canadian citizens present this at a port of entry. Mexican citizens apply at a U.S. consulate. You can use Migrate Mate to review UT Austin's hiring patterns before you reach the offer stage.
How long does TN status last at UT Austin and can it be renewed?
TN status is granted in increments of up to three years and can be renewed indefinitely as long as you maintain a valid job offer in a qualifying USMCA occupation. UT Austin can issue a new support letter for each renewal. Canadian citizens can renew at the border; Mexican citizens renew through a consular appointment.
What makes a TN application at UT Austin more likely to succeed?
The strongest applications combine a specific USMCA occupation category with a directly related degree and a clearly professional-level role description in the offer letter. For UT Austin roles, job titles in research, engineering, or computer systems tend to have the clearest USMCA alignment. Mismatches between your degree field and the role's duties are the most common source of complications at admission.
How does TN visa admission work at The University Of Texas At Austin?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from The University Of Texas At Austin, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
