Match your credentials to USMCA professions
UTMB hires across clinical and research disciplines, but TN status is only available for roles on the USMCA professions list. Cross-check your occupation against that list before applying so you don't pursue roles that are structurally ineligible for TN admission.
Target departments with recurring professional needs
UTMB's research centers, nursing units, and clinical science departments consistently recruit qualified professionals. Focus your search on these areas, they generate the most sustained demand for the types of specialty roles that align with TN-eligible occupations.
Request a detailed offer letter before your border appointment
UTMB provides an offer or support letter, but you present it yourself at the port of entry or U.S. consulate. Confirm the letter specifies your job title, duties, USMCA profession category, and employment duration before you schedule your admission appointment.
Prepare credentials for Canadian border admission
Canadian nationals can seek TN admission directly at a U.S. land border or preclearance airport, no consular appointment needed. Bring your UTMB offer letter, proof of Canadian citizenship, and credential documents that confirm your qualifications for the listed USMCA profession.
Use Migrate Mate to verify UTMB's sponsorship track record
Before investing time in UTMB's application process, use Migrate Mate to review its visa-sponsorship history by role and department. That data helps you gauge where TN-supported hiring has historically occurred, so you can prioritize the positions most likely to lead to an offer.
Align your salary expectations using wage data
UTMB operates in a competitive academic medical market in Texas. Use the OFLC Wage Search or Bureau of Labor Statistics data to benchmark prevailing wages for your occupation in the Galveston area before negotiating, so your expectations align with what institutional employers typically offer.
The University of Texas Medical Branch TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does The University of Texas Medical Branch sponsor TN visas?
UTMB supports TN admission by issuing offer letters for qualifying roles. The TN category is treaty-based under USMCA, so UTMB doesn't file a petition with USCIS. Instead, you present UTMB's offer letter at a U.S. port of entry or consulate, where a Customs and Border Protection officer makes the admission decision.
Which roles at UTMB are eligible for TN status?
TN eligibility is determined by the USMCA professions list, not by UTMB's preferences. At UTMB, roles in nursing, scientific research, engineering, pharmacy, and medical technology frequently align with USMCA-listed occupations. Clinical education and laboratory science positions are also common areas where TN-supported candidates are hired.
How do I approach the TN admission process when accepting a UTMB offer?
Once UTMB extends an offer, request a detailed support letter that specifies your USMCA profession category, role description, and employment terms. Canadian nationals proceed directly to a port of entry or airport preclearance. Mexican nationals apply at a U.S. consulate. CBP or a consular officer makes the final admission decision based on your documents.
How long does TN status last when working at UTMB?
Each TN admission is granted for up to three years and can be renewed indefinitely as long as you maintain a qualifying job at UTMB and continue to meet USMCA profession requirements. There is no lifetime limit on renewals, making TN a stable long-term status for professionals in ongoing roles at UTMB.
How do I find open TN-eligible positions at UTMB?
Search UTMB's careers portal for roles that match USMCA-listed occupations, then cross-reference using Migrate Mate to confirm UTMB's sponsorship history for similar positions. Filtering by department, particularly research, clinical sciences, and nursing, will surface the roles most likely to support TN admission for qualified Canadian and Mexican professionals.
How does TN visa admission work at The University of Texas Medical Branch?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from The University of Texas Medical Branch, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
