Match your credentials to USMCA professions
TN eligibility depends on whether your specific role appears on the USMCA professions list. At UTRGV, roles in education, engineering, and scientific research commonly qualify. Verify your occupation's SOC code against the list before applying to any position.
Target faculty and research postings directly
UTRGV's TN hires concentrate in academic departments and research centers. Filter your job search by college or research institute rather than browsing all openings. Department-level postings in STEM, health sciences, and social sciences are where TN-eligible roles most frequently appear.
Confirm your degree field matches the job description
UTRGV's hiring managers evaluate whether your credential directly relates to the posted role, not just your general field. A computer science degree supporting a data analyst position reads more clearly than an interdisciplinary degree. Frame your application materials so the connection is unambiguous.
Request the offer letter well before your start date
UTRGV issues a support letter that you present at the port of entry or consulate. Canadian nationals can use this at the border for same-day admission; Mexican nationals must schedule a consular appointment first. Build at least three to four weeks of buffer into your timeline for the consular route.
Use Migrate Mate to confirm UTRGV's TN hiring history
Before investing time in an application, verify that UTRGV actively hires in your specific occupation under TN. Migrate Mate surfaces employer-level sponsorship data so you can see which roles and departments have supported TN professionals, helping you target your outreach more precisely.
Prepare wage evidence before the border or consulate
Officers may ask whether your offered salary meets prevailing wage standards for your occupation in the Rio Grande Valley region. Use the OFLC Wage Search to pull the prevailing wage for your SOC code and metropolitan area before your admission appointment so you can answer confidently.
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley sponsor TN visas?
Yes. UTRGV supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican professionals in USMCA-listed occupations. The university issues an offer letter that the candidate presents at a U.S. port of entry or consulate. UTRGV does not file a USCIS petition for TN, and there is no Labor Condition Application involved in the process.
Which roles and departments at UTRGV typically qualify for TN admission?
Faculty positions, research scientist roles, engineers, and certain health sciences professionals are the most common TN-eligible categories at UTRGV. Departments within STEM colleges, the School of Medicine, and research institutes tend to hire in occupations that appear on the USMCA professions list. Administrative and support roles generally do not qualify.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a job offer from UTRGV?
Once UTRGV extends a written offer, the university's HR or international office prepares a support letter confirming your role, salary, and TN classification. Canadian citizens present this letter directly at a U.S. land border or airport port of entry. Mexican nationals use it to schedule and attend a consular interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate in Mexico.
How long does the TN process take when working with UTRGV?
Canadian nationals can complete TN admission in a single day at the port of entry if documents are in order. Mexican nationals typically wait two to eight weeks for a consular appointment, depending on the U.S. consulate's scheduling availability. UTRGV's internal process for preparing your support letter generally takes one to two weeks after the offer is finalized.
How do I find open TN-eligible positions at UTRGV?
Search UTRGV's careers portal filtering by faculty and research categories, then cross-reference each role against the USMCA professions list to confirm TN eligibility before applying. Migrate Mate also lets you view UTRGV's sponsorship history by occupation so you can prioritize roles where TN admission has been supported before, saving you time on applications unlikely to lead to a TN offer.
How does TN visa admission work at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
