Overview:
The Meta-Cognition and Applied Memory Lab at Tufts University invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate to contribute to ongoing NSF Growing Convergence Research projects examining how students experience and respond to uncertainty during STEM learning. In this work, uncertainty refers to situations in which learners encounter information they cannot immediately interpret, resolve, or integrate. This includes moments of confusion during problem solving, conflicting interpretations of data, incomplete or ambiguous explanations, and breakdowns in understanding while learning new concepts. These experiences can lead to productive engagement and deeper learning, or to disengagement and avoidance, depending on how they are interpreted and regulated.
What You'll Do:
The research focuses on identifying the cognitive, affective, and social processes that shape these responses. Current projects examine how students monitor and interpret their own confusion, how those interpretations guide attention and information seeking, and how patterns of responding to uncertainty develop over time. A central component of the work also examines autobiographical memory for past experiences of uncertainty in learning, including how individuals recall and reinterpret prior episodes of confusion and how those memories shape future engagement, persistence, and sense of agency in STEM contexts.
The postdoctoral associate will design and conduct experimental and field-based studies, analyze behavioral and related data, and contribute to manuscript preparation and project deliverables. The position involves collaboration with interdisciplinary partners and includes opportunities to mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers.
We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Metacognition and self-regulated learning in STEM contexts
- Cognitive and affective responses to confusion, ambiguity, or unresolved information
- Autobiographical memory and its role in shaping learning or decision-making
- Experimental design and quantitative analysis (e.g., mixed-effects models or related approaches)
- Research conducted in classroom or other in situ learning environments
- Modeling based approaches
This position offers the opportunity to contribute to a set of coordinated projects examining how students interpret and respond to uncertainty in STEM learning and how those processes can be leveraged to support sustained engagement and effective learning.
What We're Looking For:
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in psychology, cognitive science, education, or a related field by the start date. Strong methodological and analytical skills are required.
The appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal based on performance, funding, and mutual agreement.
Salary Range: Minimum $65,000.00, Midpoint $65,000.00, Maximum $65,000.00

Align your credentials to USMCA professions
TN eligibility at Tufts depends on your role appearing on the USMCA professions list. Cross-check your target job title against O*NET occupation profiles and confirm your degree field directly supports the listed profession before applying.
Target research and faculty-adjacent roles
Tufts regularly brings on research scientists, engineers, and social science professionals under TN status. Roles tied to funded research programs or clinical departments tend to involve structured international hiring support and are more likely to include offer letter assistance.
Request a TN support letter early in negotiations
Once Tufts extends an offer, ask HR explicitly whether they'll provide a TN support letter. Universities often have templates, but timelines vary by department. Getting this confirmation before your start date prevents last-minute delays at the border or consulate.
Verify your wage meets prevailing wage levels
Tufts must pay the prevailing wage for your occupation and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the wage level for your role in the Boston metro area before accepting an offer, so you can identify any discrepancy in advance.
Search Migrate Mate for Tufts TN-eligible openings
Use Migrate Mate to filter Tufts University job listings by TN visa compatibility. The platform surfaces roles where TN admission is a realistic path based on occupation type, helping you avoid wasting time on positions outside the USMCA professions list.
Prepare your professional credentials package in advance
Canadian nationals entering at the border need to present their offer letter, degree transcripts, and professional credentials on the spot. Organize certified copies of your credentials before your final travel date, since border officers assess TN eligibility in real time with no advance petition.
Tufts University TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Tufts University sponsor TN visas?
Tufts University supports TN admission by issuing offer letters for qualifying roles. Because TN is a treaty-based admission category under USMCA, there's no employer petition involved. Tufts HR provides the documentation you present at the border or U.S. consulate. Eligible roles must fall within the USMCA professions list.
Which roles at Tufts University typically qualify for TN admission?
Research scientists, engineers, computer systems analysts, social workers, and certain healthcare professionals are among the occupations that commonly align with USMCA TN categories at Tufts. Academic and research-focused departments tend to have the most experience supporting TN candidates, particularly within STEM and health sciences programs.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a Tufts University offer?
After Tufts extends an offer, contact HR to request a TN support letter confirming your job title, duties, and qualifications. Canadian nationals present this letter directly at a port of entry. Mexican nationals apply at a U.S. consulate. USCIS is not involved in TN admissions made at the border or consulate.
How long does TN admission take when entering through a Tufts offer letter?
Canadian nationals typically receive a TN admission decision on the same day at the port of entry, assuming documentation is complete. Mexican nationals applying at a consulate should expect a standard nonimmigrant visa interview timeline, which varies by post. TN status is granted in increments and can be renewed without a cap.
How do I find open TN-eligible positions at Tufts University?
Migrate Mate lets you filter Tufts University listings by visa type, including TN-compatible roles, so you can identify openings that match USMCA occupation categories without manually reviewing every job description. Cross-reference any target role against the USMCA professions list and your degree field before submitting your application.
How does TN visa admission work at Tufts University?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from Tufts University, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate.
