Match your credentials to USMCA professions
TN eligibility depends on your occupation appearing on the USMCA professions list, not just your degree. Cross-check your role title and field against that list before applying to UCSF, since academic medical centers post positions with varied titles that don't always map cleanly.
Target UCSF departments that hire internationally
UCSF's research institutes, clinical departments, and its graduate school of pharmacy regularly fill roles that align with TN-eligible occupations. Focus your search on these units, since their hiring patterns reflect a consistent need for specialists in science, healthcare, and technical fields.
Request a specific offer letter for border entry
When UCSF extends an offer, ask HR to include your job title, USMCA occupation category, intended duration, and qualifying degree requirement in the letter. Canadian nationals present this at the border; Mexican nationals need it for the consular appointment, so precision matters before you travel.
Verify your wage against OFLC Wage Search
TN doesn't require a formal prevailing wage filing, but UCSF's offered salary still needs to reflect the going rate for your occupation and location. Check the OFLC Wage Search for your SOC code in San Francisco before your first salary conversation to negotiate from an informed position.
Use Migrate Mate to find UCSF TN-eligible openings
Search Migrate Mate to filter UCSF job listings by TN-eligible visa type, so you're only reviewing roles the university actively supports for Canadian and Mexican nationals, rather than sorting through every open position manually across their careers portal.
Prepare your degree evaluation before the interview
UCSF hiring managers for research and clinical roles often request credential documentation early in the process. Having a credential evaluation ready for non-U.S. degrees, and knowing which O*NET occupation profile best matches your role, positions you to move quickly once an offer is extended.
University of California, San Francisco TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does University of California, San Francisco sponsor TN visas?
Yes, UCSF supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals in USMCA-listed occupations. Rather than filing a petition, UCSF issues an offer letter that the worker presents at a port of entry or U.S. consulate. Roles in research, clinical operations, pharmacy, and technical fields are among those that commonly qualify.
Which UCSF roles and departments typically qualify for TN status?
UCSF's research institutes, school of pharmacy, clinical departments, and IT units hire for positions that align with TN-eligible categories such as scientist, engineer, computer systems analyst, pharmacist, and medical technologist. Eligibility depends on the specific role matching a USMCA profession, not just the department, so confirm your occupation category before applying.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a UCSF offer?
Once UCSF extends an offer, work with their HR or international scholar services team to obtain a detailed offer letter confirming your USMCA occupation category, degree requirement, and employment duration. Canadian nationals present this letter at a U.S. port of entry; Mexican nationals schedule a consular appointment and submit the letter as part of that process.
How long does TN approval take for UCSF positions?
Canadian nationals can receive TN admission on the same day at the border, assuming documentation is complete. Mexican nationals apply through a U.S. consulate, where appointment availability determines the timeline. Initial TN status is granted for up to three years and can be renewed in three-year increments as long as the employment relationship continues.
How do I find open TN-eligible jobs at UCSF?
Migrate Mate lets you filter UCSF job listings by visa type, including TN, so you can focus on roles the university supports for Canadian and Mexican nationals. You can also search UCSF's careers portal directly and look for positions in research, clinical, pharmacy, or technical departments where TN-eligible occupations are most common.
How does TN visa admission work at University of California, San Francisco?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from University of California, San Francisco, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
