Align your degree to USMCA professions
TN eligibility at UF depends on your role matching a specific USMCA profession list category. Cross-reference your degree field and job title against the list before applying. A mismatch between your credentials and the posted role is the most common reason TN candidates get turned away at UF.
Target UF's research and IFAS divisions
UF's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences and its research centers hire scientists, engineers, and computer specialists who regularly qualify for TN status. These units post roles requiring specialized degrees that align cleanly with USMCA professions, making them practical entry points for TN candidates.
Request the offer letter before your border crossing
UF's HR or international services office issues a support letter describing your role, salary, and TN profession category. Get this letter finalized and reviewed for accuracy before you travel. Canadian nationals present it directly at the port of entry; Mexican nationals need it for their consular appointment.
Verify your wage against OFLC Wage Search
Although TN doesn't require a Labor Condition Application, UF's posted salaries must reflect the role's actual level. Look up your occupation's prevailing wage through OFLC Wage Search and confirm your offer meets it. Officers at the border can ask about compensation, and a low offer creates unnecessary friction.
Use Migrate Mate to identify UF's active TN roles
Filtering UF's open positions by TN-eligible occupation codes takes time without the right tools. Migrate Mate surfaces roles at UF where TN professionals have been placed, so you can focus your applications on departments with a real track record of supporting TN admission rather than guessing.
Confirm your O*NET classification before the interview
UF hiring managers may not know which O*NET job zone your role falls under, but border officers do reference occupation classifications. Pull your O*NET profile for the specific job title, confirm it matches a USMCA profession, and bring documentation showing the job's typical education requirements to support your case.
University of Florida TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does University of Florida sponsor TN visas?
Yes. University of Florida supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying USMCA professions. UF issues the offer letter and supporting documentation you need, but there is no employer petition involved. You present those documents at the port of entry or U.S. consulate to obtain TN status directly.
Which roles and departments at UF typically support TN admission?
UF most frequently hires TN professionals in computer science, engineering, scientific research, and healthcare disciplines. The College of Engineering, the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, and UF Health are particularly active. Roles must fall under a recognized USMCA profession category, so your job title and degree field both need to align.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a UF job offer?
After accepting a UF offer, contact UF's international services or HR office to request your TN support letter. The letter should specify your job title, USMCA profession category, employment duration, and salary. Canadian nationals take this letter to a port of entry; Mexican nationals use it to schedule a consular appointment and apply for a TN visa stamp.
How long does it take to get TN status through UF?
Canadian nationals admitted at the port of entry typically receive a decision the same day. Mexican nationals applying at a U.S. consulate should expect a few weeks for scheduling and processing, depending on consulate workload. UF can begin preparing your support letter as soon as your hiring paperwork is finalized, so start that process early.
How do I find open TN-eligible positions at University of Florida?
Start by searching UF's careers portal and filtering for roles in your USMCA profession category. Migrate Mate also surfaces UF positions where TN professionals have been placed, helping you identify departments with a clear track record. Cross-reference each role against USCIS guidance on TN profession categories before applying to avoid wasted effort.
How does TN visa admission work at University of Florida?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from University of Florida, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
