Match your occupation to USMCA categories
TN admission is limited to specific USMCA professions, so verify your occupation code against the official list before applying to UMB roles. Scientific, technical, and healthcare-adjacent positions in university settings often align cleanly, but job titles don't always match USMCA categories exactly.
Target research and clinical support roles
UMB's academic medical and research mission generates recurring demand for scientists, engineers, and allied health professionals in TN-eligible categories. Focusing your search on grants-funded research teams and clinical trial support units increases your odds of finding roles with genuine TN-compatible job duties.
Request a detailed offer letter from HR
Your TN admission depends entirely on the offer letter UMB's HR team provides. Ask explicitly for your USMCA occupation category, a description of qualifying duties, your degree requirement, and your employment period. Border officers and consular officers use this letter to adjudicate your TN status on the spot.
Verify your degree aligns with the role
Each USMCA profession requires a specific credential, and UMB hiring managers may not flag a mismatch during recruitment. Cross-reference your degree field against the USMCA profession's education requirement using O*NET before accepting an offer, so you don't face a denial at the port of entry.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified TN employers
Before targeting UMB specifically, confirm it supports TN admission for your occupation by searching on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employer-level TN hiring data. Narrowing your search to education-sector employers with a track record in your occupation category saves time and avoids mismatched applications.
Prepare for same-day admission at the border
Canadian nationals get TN status at the port of entry without advance visa processing, so your documents must be complete before you travel. Bring your UMB offer letter, credential verification, and any professional license your occupation requires. Incomplete documentation means immediate delay or denial with no same-day remedy.
University of Maryland, Baltimore TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does University of Maryland, Baltimore sponsor TN visas?
UMB supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals in USMCA-eligible professions by issuing offer letters that document the role, required credentials, and employment terms. There's no USCIS petition involved. The worker presents UMB's offer letter at the border or U.S. consulate to obtain TN status directly.
Which roles and departments at UMB typically support TN admission?
Research-intensive departments, clinical trial units, and scientific support functions tend to generate the most TN-compatible roles at UMB. Positions in biological sciences, engineering, computer science, and certain healthcare-adjacent fields align well with USMCA occupation categories. Administrative and general management roles rarely qualify under the USMCA professions list.
How do I start the TN process once UMB extends an offer?
Once UMB extends an offer, ask HR to issue a detailed support letter confirming your USMCA occupation category, qualifying duties, required degree, and employment dates. Canadian nationals then present this letter at a port of entry. Mexican nationals use it to apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate before traveling.
How long does TN admission take when working with UMB?
Canadian nationals can receive TN status the same day at the port of entry if documentation is complete. Mexican nationals typically wait several weeks for a consular visa appointment. TN status is granted in increments of up to three years and can be renewed indefinitely as long as the qualifying employment continues at UMB.
How do I find open TN-compatible roles at UMB?
Search UMB's careers portal filtering for research, clinical, and technical positions, then cross-reference each role's listed degree requirement against the USMCA professions list before applying. Migrate Mate can also help you identify education-sector employers actively supporting TN admission in your occupation, so you prioritize employers with the right hiring patterns.
