Align your occupation with USMCA professions
UNC Chapel Hill can only support TN admission for roles that appear on the USMCA professions list. Before applying, verify your target job title maps cleanly to a qualifying occupation using O*NET to confirm the standard job zone and duties match.
Target research and academic departments directly
UNC's strongest TN hiring sits in research labs, clinical departments, and STEM faculty positions. Reaching out to principal investigators or department hiring managers, not just HR, often surfaces roles before they're formally posted on the central careers portal.
Prepare your credential documentation early
TN admission requires proof that your degree directly supports your offered role. Gather your transcripts, degree certificates, and any professional licenses upfront. Canadian nationals present these at the port of entry, so disorganized documentation causes real delays at the border.
Request an offer letter that meets border standards
UNC Chapel Hill's HR team issues offer letters for TN candidates, but the letter must specify your TN occupation category, salary, employment duration, and your professional qualifications. Ask HR explicitly to confirm the letter includes all elements USCIS border officers expect to review.
Search UNC's verified TN roles through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to find UNC Chapel Hill roles filtered for TN-eligible positions. The platform surfaces jobs tied to employers with documented TN hiring history, saving you from applying to postings where TN admission support isn't actually available for that specific role.
Understand TN renewal timing before your start date
TN status is granted in three-year increments and must be renewed before expiration. If your UNC appointment runs longer than your initial TN period, coordinate with the university's international office well in advance to ensure your offer letter renewal is issued without gaps.
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill sponsor TN visas?
UNC Chapel Hill supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying USMCA occupations. The university issues offer letters that TN candidates present at the U.S. border or consulate. TN is not employer-petitioned, so there's no USCIS filing, but UNC's international office coordinates the documentation process for eligible hires.
Which roles and departments at UNC Chapel Hill typically hire TN professionals?
TN hiring at UNC Chapel Hill is concentrated in research, healthcare, and STEM-adjacent academic departments. Roles such as scientific researchers, computer systems analysts, engineers, and clinical professionals align with the USMCA professions list. Faculty, postdoctoral, and research staff positions are among the most common pathways for TN candidates at the university.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a UNC Chapel Hill job offer?
Once you have a written offer from UNC, work with the university's international services office to confirm your role qualifies under the USMCA professions list. UNC then issues a formal support letter. Canadian nationals present that letter at a U.S. port of entry; Mexican nationals apply at a U.S. consulate abroad before traveling.
How long does TN processing take for UNC Chapel Hill hires?
Canadian nationals typically receive TN admission at the port of entry the same day, assuming documentation is complete. Mexican nationals go through consular processing, which can take several weeks depending on appointment availability. Coordinating your offer letter and credential documents early with UNC's international office avoids most preventable delays.
How do I find open TN-eligible positions at UNC Chapel Hill?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by employers with documented TN hiring history, making it easier to identify UNC Chapel Hill roles where TN admission support is realistic for your occupation. You can also search UNC's careers portal directly, but confirm with the hiring department that your specific role and job duties align with a USMCA-listed profession before applying.
How does TN visa admission work at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
