Match your degree to USMCA professions
TN eligibility at UNT depends on your role falling within the USMCA professions list and your degree directly matching that occupation. Check O*NET to confirm your job title maps to a qualifying profession before applying to any UNT posting.
Target research and IT departments first
UNT's research centers and information technology units regularly hire Canadian and Mexican nationals in roles like computer systems analyst, engineer, and scientist. These departments have the most experience issuing offer letters for TN-eligible candidates at a large public university.
Request a detailed offer letter early
Your TN admission at the border or consulate hinges on an offer letter that specifies your job title, qualifying USMCA profession category, duties, and employment period. Ask UNT's HR team to confirm all four elements are explicitly stated before you travel or schedule your consulate appointment.
Use Migrate Mate to find open TN roles
Searching UNT's general careers page doesn't filter for TN-eligible positions. Migrate Mate lets you search roles at UNT filtered by visa type, so you spend time on postings where TN admission is a realistic path given the occupation and department.
Prepare credential documentation specific to education roles
UNT hiring managers in academic departments expect foreign credentials to meet U.S. degree equivalency standards. Have your transcripts evaluated by a NACES-approved credential evaluation service before interviewing, since UNT may require documentation upfront rather than after an offer is extended.
Clarify renewal timing with UNT HR before your start date
TN status is granted in increments of up to three years and must be renewed before expiration. Confirm with UNT's international HR team how far in advance they issue renewal offer letters, since delays in institutional processing can compress your preparation window at the port of entry.
University of North Texas TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does University of North Texas sponsor TN visas?
Yes. UNT issues offer letters that support TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals in USMCA-eligible occupations. The university does not file a petition with USCIS for TN candidates. Instead, you present UNT's offer letter at a U.S. port of entry or consulate to request TN status directly.
Which roles and departments at UNT typically support TN admission?
Research faculty, computer systems analysts, engineers, and academic scientists are among the most common TN-eligible roles at UNT. Research-intensive departments and the university's IT and data infrastructure teams tend to hire most frequently in USMCA profession categories that qualify for TN admission.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a UNT job offer?
After UNT extends an offer, request a formal offer letter that includes your USMCA profession category, job duties, degree requirement, and employment dates. Canadian citizens present this letter directly at a U.S. port of entry. Mexican nationals schedule a consulate appointment and submit additional documentation through USCIS nonimmigrant visa procedures.
How long does TN admission typically take for UNT positions?
Canadian citizens can receive TN admission at the border on the same day if documentation is complete. Mexican nationals applying through a U.S. consulate face appointment wait times that vary by location and season. Allow several weeks for consulate processing. UNT's offer letter preparation typically takes one to two weeks through HR.
How do I find TN-eligible job openings at University of North Texas?
UNT's careers portal lists all open positions but doesn't filter by visa type. Migrate Mate lets you search UNT roles by TN eligibility so you can focus on positions where your USMCA profession category aligns with the job requirements, saving time before you approach UNT's HR team about offer letter support.
How does TN visa admission work at University of North Texas?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from University of North Texas, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
