Match your credentials to USMCA professions
TN eligibility at USF depends on your role falling within a recognized USMCA profession. Cross-reference your target position title against the official USMCA professions list and confirm your degree field directly supports the role, not just the department.
Target departments with recurring specialty needs
USF's health sciences, engineering, and research divisions regularly hire in roles like systems analyst, scientific technician, and accountant, all of which sit on the USMCA list. Focusing your search on these divisions improves your odds of landing a TN-eligible opening.
Request a detailed offer letter early
USF's offer letter must describe your job duties, TN profession category, degree requirement, and employment duration. Request a draft before your border appointment so you can flag any gaps, since a vague letter is the most common cause of TN delays at entry.
Verify your wage against OFLC Wage Search
While TN doesn't require an LCA, your offered salary should align with the prevailing wage for your occupation and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to benchmark USF's offer before signing, so you enter the border crossing with a well-documented, defensible package.
Use Migrate Mate to find open TN roles at USF
Searching broadly across job boards makes it hard to identify which USF roles are realistically TN-eligible. Migrate Mate filters for TN-compatible positions, helping you focus your application effort on openings where USF has an established pattern of supporting TN admission.
Prepare for status questions about long-term intent
Canadians presenting at the border and Mexicans at a consulate both face questions about nonimmigrant intent. USF roles in tenured tracks or multi-year research programs can raise scrutiny, so bring documentation showing your temporary, defined-term employment arrangement and home-country ties.
University of South Florida TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does University of South Florida sponsor TN visas?
Yes. USF supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals hired into roles that qualify under the USMCA professions list. USF issues an offer letter that you present at the border or U.S. consulate. There is no USCIS petition involved, and the process is initiated after USF extends a formal job offer.
Which roles and departments at USF typically support TN admission?
TN-eligible roles at USF tend to cluster in health sciences, engineering, computer science, accounting, and research administration, all fields with clear USMCA profession matches. Faculty, research scientists, systems analysts, and clinical dietitians are common examples. Administrative roles without a defined specialty occupation on the USMCA list are generally not eligible.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a job offer from USF?
After USF extends an offer, work with their international services office to obtain a support letter detailing your job title, duties, qualifying USMCA profession category, required degree, and employment period. Canadians present this letter directly at a U.S. port of entry. Mexican nationals apply at a U.S. consulate and attend a visa interview before traveling.
How long does TN admission at USF typically take?
For Canadians, TN admission happens at the border on the same day if documentation is complete, though preparation typically takes one to three weeks. Mexican nationals should allow four to eight weeks for consular scheduling and processing. USF's international office can advise on typical turnaround for their offer letter preparation specifically.
How do I find TN-eligible job openings at USF?
Start by searching USF's careers portal filtered by department areas like health sciences, IT, or research. Cross-check any role you're interested in against the USMCA professions list to confirm TN eligibility before applying. Migrate Mate also surfaces TN-compatible openings at universities like USF, saving you from applying to roles that don't qualify under USMCA.
How does TN visa admission work at University of South Florida?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from University of South Florida, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
