Target departments that hire USMCA-listed roles
UVA's research institutes, medical center, and academic departments regularly hire in occupations that appear on the USMCA professions list. Cross-reference the role title against that list before applying, TN admission only covers specific occupations, not all professional jobs at the university.
Request an offer letter before the border
UVA issues an employment offer letter that you present at the port of entry or consulate, there's no USCIS petition involved. Confirm with HR that the letter specifies your occupation, wage, and employment period before you travel or schedule your consular appointment.
Verify your occupation qualifies using O*NET
Look up your intended role in O*NET to confirm the degree requirements and job duties match a recognized USMCA profession. UVA's HR team will expect your credentials to align precisely with the occupation listed in your offer letter, so mismatches create real problems at the border.
Check wage alignment with OFLC Wage Search
TN doesn't require a formal prevailing wage filing, but UVA must offer a wage consistent with what similarly employed workers earn. Run your occupation and location through OFLC Wage Search before negotiations so you understand the expected range going into your offer discussion.
Search UVA's active TN-eligible roles on Migrate Mate
UVA posts roles across multiple hiring systems, making it easy to miss positions that suit your TN occupation. Migrate Mate filters open positions by employer TN hiring history, so you can focus on roles where UVA has consistently supported TN admission for your field.
Prepare credential documentation specific to your profession
Canadian and Mexican nationals both need to demonstrate their credentials match the USMCA occupation at entry or at the consulate. For UVA roles in healthcare or research, gather degree transcripts, professional licenses, and any credential evaluations before your interview so nothing delays admission.
University of Virginia TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does University of Virginia sponsor TN visas?
UVA supports TN admission by issuing employment offer letters for eligible Canadian and Mexican nationals hired into USMCA-listed occupations. Because TN is treaty-based admission rather than an employer-filed petition, UVA's role is to provide documentation confirming the job offer, occupation, and employment terms, you then present that letter at the border or U.S. consulate.
Which roles and departments at UVA typically qualify for TN?
TN-eligible roles at UVA tend to appear in research, engineering, clinical sciences, computer science, and academic instruction, all fields that map to recognized USMCA professions. The medical center and research institutes hire frequently in these categories. Roles in general administration or facilities management typically fall outside the USMCA professions list and won't qualify.
How do I start the TN process for a job at UVA?
Once UVA extends an offer, their HR team issues an offer letter specifying your occupation, duties, wage, and employment period. Canadian nationals take that letter directly to a port of entry for CBP inspection. Mexican nationals schedule a nonimmigrant visa appointment at a U.S. consulate. USCIS is not involved in either process, and there's no petition filing period to wait out.
How long does the TN process take when working with UVA?
For Canadians, TN admission happens at the border on the day of entry, there's no waiting period once you have UVA's offer letter in hand. Mexican nationals face consular appointment wait times, which vary by location and time of year. TN status is granted in three-year increments and can be renewed indefinitely as long as you remain in a qualifying role at UVA.
How do I find TN-eligible openings at UVA?
UVA lists positions across its central jobs portal and department-level postings, which can make it difficult to identify roles where TN has historically been supported. Migrate Mate aggregates UVA's active listings and filters by the employer's track record with TN-eligible occupations, helping you prioritize roles most likely to result in a successful offer letter and admission.
How does TN visa admission work at University of Virginia?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from University of Virginia, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
