Match your credentials to USMCA professions
UW-Whitewater hires across academic and technical roles, but TN status only covers specific USMCA-listed professions. Cross-reference your degree and job title against the official USMCA professions list before applying, since a mismatch disqualifies you regardless of the offer.
Target departments with recurring TN hires
Faculty positions in sciences, computer science, and engineering at UW-Whitewater align most consistently with TN-eligible occupations. Prioritize open roles in these departments, where hiring managers are more familiar with supporting TN admission documentation for incoming professionals.
Request a detailed offer letter early
UW-Whitewater's HR team issues the support letter you present at the border or consulate. Ask explicitly for a letter that states your TN profession category, your duties, your salary, and the employment period, since border officers scrutinize these details closely.
Verify your wage meets prevailing standards
Even though TN doesn't require a formal LCA, your offered salary should align with the OFLC Wage Search and O*NET occupation data for your role and location. A salary well below prevailing wage can raise questions about the legitimacy of the position during admission.
Use Migrate Mate to find open TN roles
Search Migrate Mate to identify current openings at UW-Whitewater that are realistically open to TN professionals. The platform surfaces employer hiring patterns so you can focus your applications on positions with the strongest fit before reaching out to HR.
Prepare for admission at the port of entry
Canadian citizens present their UW-Whitewater offer letter directly at the border without a prior USCIS filing. Bring your degree credentials, the offer letter, and any professional license if your occupation requires one. Officers can and do ask detailed questions about your specific duties.
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does University of Wisconsin-Whitewater sponsor TN visas?
UW-Whitewater supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican professionals by issuing the required offer letter for eligible roles. The university does not file a petition with USCIS. Instead, you present the offer letter at a U.S. port of entry or consulate. Roles must fall within the USMCA professions list to qualify.
Which roles at UW-Whitewater typically qualify for TN status?
Academic and research positions are the strongest fit for TN at UW-Whitewater. Faculty roles in sciences, engineering, computer science, and mathematics align well with USMCA-listed professions such as scientist, engineer, and computer systems analyst. Administrative or student affairs roles rarely qualify unless the position requires a degree in a specifically listed TN profession.
How do I start the TN process after receiving an offer from UW-Whitewater?
Once UW-Whitewater issues your offer letter, Canadian citizens proceed directly to a U.S. port of entry with their credentials, offer letter, and any required professional documentation. Mexican citizens apply at a U.S. consulate for a TN visa stamp first. USCIS is not involved in either case, and there is no petition filing or waiting period tied to agency processing.
How long does it take to get TN status through UW-Whitewater?
For Canadians, TN status is typically granted the same day at the border, assuming documentation is complete. Mexican nationals should allow additional time for a consular appointment, which varies by location and demand. UW-Whitewater's internal HR process for preparing your offer letter may also add a few business days before you can proceed.
How do I find open TN-eligible jobs at UW-Whitewater?
Use Migrate Mate to filter for open positions at UW-Whitewater that align with USMCA-listed professions. Once you identify a role, confirm the position title maps to a recognized TN category before applying. Reaching out to the relevant department directly can also help clarify whether the team has supported TN candidates previously.
How does TN visa admission work at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
