Match your degree to the USMCA list
TN eligibility is determined by USMCA profession categories, not job titles. Pull up O*NET to confirm your occupation's standard classification, then verify your degree field directly corresponds to the listed credential requirement for that profession before applying to any VCU role.
Target VCU's research and clinical departments
VCU's medical campus and research centers regularly hire in scientific, healthcare, and technical fields that map cleanly to USMCA professions. Prioritize postings from the School of Medicine, School of Engineering, and research institutes where TN-eligible roles concentrate most heavily.
Request an offer letter covering all TN requirements
VCU's HR team needs to issue a letter confirming your profession category, job duties, your Canadian or Mexican citizenship, and that the position is temporary in nature. Missing any of these elements can result in a border denial, so confirm the letter's contents before traveling.
Prepare credential documents before your border appointment
Canadian nationals present their offer letter and credentials directly at a port of entry without advance USCIS filing. Gather your degree transcripts, professional licenses if applicable, and passport well ahead of your start date so nothing delays same-day admission at the border.
Search verified TN employer data on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter VCU job listings by visa type and identify open roles where TN admission is supported. Seeing which departments are actively hiring TN professionals helps you focus your application on positions most likely to move forward without complications.
Negotiate your start date around TN admission timing
TN status is granted in up to three-year increments but begins only on the admission date. Align your offer letter's start date with your planned border crossing or consulate appointment so your authorized period matches what VCU and you have agreed upon.
Virginia Commonwealth University TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Virginia Commonwealth University sponsor TN visas?
Yes. VCU supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals in USMCA-listed professions by issuing the required employer offer letter. Because TN is treaty-based admission rather than an employer petition, VCU does not file with USCIS on your behalf. You present VCU's offer letter at a port of entry or U.S. consulate to obtain TN status directly.
Which roles and departments at VCU typically support TN admission?
TN-eligible hires at VCU tend to concentrate in research science, engineering, healthcare, computer science, and academic faculty positions. The medical campus, School of Engineering, and research institutes are frequent sources of postings that align with USMCA profession categories. Roles requiring specialized degrees in recognized USMCA fields are your strongest targets.
How do I start the TN process after receiving a VCU job offer?
Once VCU extends an offer, ask HR to issue a support letter that specifies your profession category, job duties, temporary nature of employment, and your citizenship. Canadian nationals then present this letter at a U.S. port of entry. Mexican nationals schedule a visa appointment at a U.S. consulate. No USCIS petition or LCA is required for either.
How long does TN admission take when starting at VCU?
Canadian nationals can receive same-day TN admission at a port of entry once documentation is complete. Mexican nationals face a longer timeline tied to consulate appointment availability, which varies by location and season. Build several weeks of buffer into your start date negotiation with VCU to account for appointment scheduling delays.
How do I find TN-eligible job openings at VCU?
Search VCU's careers portal and filter for roles in departments known to hire TN professionals such as research, engineering, and clinical sciences. Migrate Mate lets you filter listings by visa type and view which employers actively support TN admission, helping you identify VCU postings most aligned with your USMCA profession category before you apply.
How does TN visa admission work at Virginia Commonwealth University?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from Virginia Commonwealth University, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
