Position Summary
The Astrophysics, Particle Astrophysics, and Space Sciences group of the Department of Physics at WashU in St. Louis invites applications for a postdoctoral position, for a negotiable start around September 6, 2026. The appointment is expected to be up to 2 years with subsequent year-to-year extension depending on performance and funding.
The postdoc will work in the group of Prof. Karthik Ramanathan, primarily on the development of novel superconducting detectors for particle physics applications. These include qubit-based detectors (QPDs/SQUATs) and Kinetic Inductance Detectors (KIDs). The project scope is expected to run the gamut from design to on-site nano-fabrication to device testing in the group’s dilution refrigerator, along with analyzing collected data. There is scope for the postdoc to define their own additional sub-projects – e.g., developing new sub-eV energy calibration techniques – and also interface with a larger experimental collaboration.

Match your credentials to USMCA professions
Washington University hires TN professionals in roles tied to the USMCA professions list, including engineers, scientists, researchers, and accountants. Cross-reference your job title and degree against that list using O*NET before applying to confirm your occupation qualifies.
Target research and clinical departments directly
Washington University's strongest TN hiring sits in its research labs, medical school, and academic departments. Search open postings by department rather than keyword, since research scientist and clinical roles are where the university most consistently issues offer letters for TN candidates.
Request a TN support letter before your border appointment
Washington University issues an offer letter confirming your role, salary, and USMCA profession category. Get this letter finalized before your port-of-entry or consulate appointment. Canadian nationals present it directly at the border; Mexican nationals need it for their consulate interview.
Use Migrate Mate to identify active TN employers
Before investing time in Washington University's hiring process, verify it aligns with your TN occupation category. Migrate Mate surfaces employer hiring data by visa type and role so you can confirm fit and find comparable research universities with strong TN hiring track records.
Align your degree field to the specific role
Washington University's hiring managers review whether your degree field directly corresponds to the posted role, not just your general qualifications. A computer science degree won't support a TN application for a biological research position, even if your experience overlaps substantially.
Prepare for TN renewal through continued employment
TN status is granted in three-year increments and requires an active qualifying role to renew. If your position at Washington University changes title, department, or scope significantly, work with their international office to confirm the new role still meets USMCA profession requirements before renewal.
Washington University in St. Louis TN Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Washington University in St. Louis sponsor TN visas?
Washington University in St. Louis supports TN admission for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying USMCA professions. It doesn't file a petition or LCA on your behalf. Instead, the university issues an offer letter confirming your role and salary, which you present at the border or consulate to obtain TN status directly.
Which roles and departments at Washington University typically support TN admission?
TN-supported roles at Washington University are concentrated in research, engineering, life sciences, clinical healthcare, and academic faculty positions. The medical school, research centers, and STEM departments are the most active areas. Your role must correspond to a recognized USMCA profession, so verify your job title against the professions list before applying.
How do I start the TN process after receiving an offer from Washington University?
Once Washington University extends an offer, work with the university's international office to obtain a formal support letter that specifies your occupation category, position, and compensation. Canadian nationals present this letter at a U.S. port of entry. Mexican nationals use it at a U.S. consulate to apply for a TN visa stamp before traveling.
How long does TN status take to obtain when starting at Washington University?
Canadian nationals can receive TN admission the same day at the border if documents are complete. Mexican nationals should account for consulate appointment availability, which can range from a few weeks to longer depending on location and season. Washington University's international office can help you plan your start date around these timelines.
How do I find TN-eligible job openings at Washington University in St. Louis?
Search Washington University's career portal filtering by department, then cross-check open roles against the USMCA professions list to confirm TN eligibility. Migrate Mate can also help you identify which employer types and roles align with your TN occupation category, saving time before you invest in a full application at any one institution.
How does TN visa admission work at Washington University in St. Louis?
TN status is granted under the USMCA treaty — there is no USCIS petition or Labor Condition Application required. Canadian citizens can apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with an offer letter from Washington University in St. Louis, while Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate. The role must match one of the professions listed in USMCA Appendix 1603.D.1. Migrate Mate filters TN job listings to roles that fall within the eligible profession list.
