Align your credentials before applying
Tennessee requires Nursing Assistants to hold an active CNA certification. Verify your certification is valid and transferable before submitting applications. VUMC's hiring team screens for state certification early, so gaps here can stall your candidacy before sponsorship is ever discussed.
Target VUMC's high-volume clinical units
Nursing Assistant openings at VUMC concentrate in inpatient units, surgical floors, and long-term care settings. Applying to roles in these high-demand areas increases your chances of reaching a hiring manager willing to move forward with sponsorship paperwork.
Raise sponsorship during the offer stage
Don't volunteer your visa situation in a cover letter. Wait until VUMC extends or signals an offer, then confirm their HR team can support your specific visa category. VUMC's medical center HR has experience with H-1B and TN filings for clinical support staff.
Understand TN visa eligibility for your role
Canadian and Mexican nurses holding qualifying credentials can pursue TN status for Nursing Assistant roles. Confirm your job offer letter from VUMC specifies the duties align with the DOL's TN nurse classification before presenting this option to HR.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Nursing Assistant roles
Filter by visa sponsorship type to surface active VUMC Nursing Assistant postings that match your work authorization needs. Migrate Mate surfaces roles where employers have a documented sponsorship history, so you're not guessing which listings are actually viable.
Track your OPT cap-gap timeline carefully
If you're on F-1 OPT and VUMC files an H-1B petition on your behalf before April 1, USCIS cap-gap rules extend your work authorization through September 30. Confirm your OPT end date and petition filing date with VUMC's HR team before your current status expires.

Does Vanderbilt University Medical Center sponsor H-1B visas for Nursing Assistants?
Yes, VUMC sponsors H-1B visas for Nursing Assistant roles when the position meets specialty occupation criteria and the candidate holds qualifying credentials. As a large academic medical center, VUMC has dedicated HR and legal resources to manage USCIS petitions. Confirm with the recruiter during the offer stage that your specific role and credentials qualify under H-1B requirements.
How do I apply for Nursing Assistant jobs at Vanderbilt University Medical Center?
Applications go through VUMC's online careers portal, where you can filter by role type and unit. You'll need an active Tennessee CNA certification and relevant clinical experience to be considered. Migrate Mate also lists VUMC Nursing Assistant openings filtered by visa sponsorship category, which helps you identify postings that align with your work authorization before you apply.
Which visa types does VUMC commonly use for Nursing Assistant roles?
VUMC supports H-1B, TN, J-1, and F-1 OPT and CPT for clinical support roles including Nursing Assistants. TN is common for Canadian and Mexican nationals with nursing credentials. J-1 is used for exchange programs tied to VUMC's academic medical mission. F-1 OPT works for recent graduates in healthcare-related programs completing their authorized training period.
What qualifications does VUMC expect for Nursing Assistant candidates?
VUMC requires an active Tennessee Certified Nursing Assistant certification for most Nursing Assistant roles. Prior experience in inpatient, surgical, or long-term care settings is strongly preferred. Some postings specify BLS certification. International candidates should verify that their home-country nursing credentials are recognized by the Tennessee Department of Health before applying.
How do I know if VUMC will sponsor my specific visa category before I apply?
Check VUMC's job postings for sponsorship language, and cross-reference their filing history using DOL's publicly available LCA disclosure data, which lists visa categories filed by employer and job title. For H-1B, USCIS processing typically runs three to six months for standard petitions. Reaching out to VUMC's HR team directly after a conditional offer is the most reliable way to confirm sponsorship eligibility for your category.
