Verify Your Clinical Credentials Before Applying
Texas requires Nursing Assistants to hold a state-approved Nurse Aide certification. Confirm your certification is active and transferable before submitting applications, since UTMB's credentialing team will verify it before any offer moves forward.
Target UTMB's Clinical Staffing Pipeline Directly
UTMB hires Nursing Assistants across its Galveston campus and affiliated clinics. Search their careers portal by department rather than job title alone, since postings for inpatient units and long-term care settings often appear under different classifications.
Understand How TN Status Applies to This Role
TN visa eligibility for Nursing Assistants is narrow and heavily scrutinized by USCIS. If you're a Canadian or Mexican national, confirm with UTMB's HR team whether the specific role qualifies under the USMCA nurse category before investing time in the application.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter Verified Sponsoring Employers
Not every healthcare employer that posts Nursing Assistant jobs will sponsor visas. Use Migrate Mate to find and track UTMB openings that are confirmed visa-eligible, so you're not wasting applications on roles where sponsorship isn't on the table.
Align Your OPT Start Date With UTMB's Onboarding Cycle
UTMB's clinical onboarding includes background checks, health screenings, and department orientation, which can take four to six weeks after an offer. If you're on F-1 OPT, account for this when calculating your authorized employment start date to avoid an unauthorized gap.
Ask HR About H-1B Filing Timelines During the Offer Stage
UTMB participates in the H-1B cap-exempt category as an affiliated academic medical center, which means filings aren't limited to the April lottery window. Clarify this directly with their HR or immigration team when you receive an offer, so you can plan your start date accurately.

Does University of Texas Medical Branch sponsor H-1B visas for Nursing Assistants?
Yes, UTMB does sponsor H-1B visas for qualifying roles including Nursing Assistants. As an academic medical institution affiliated with a university, UTMB may qualify as a cap-exempt employer, meaning it can file H-1B petitions outside the annual lottery window. You should confirm cap-exempt status with UTMB's HR team during the offer stage, since individual role eligibility still depends on the specific position and department.
How do I apply for Nursing Assistant jobs at University of Texas Medical Branch?
Applications go through UTMB's official careers portal, where you can search by job family, campus, and department. For visa-dependent candidates, Migrate Mate is the recommended starting point to identify which current UTMB Nursing Assistant openings are flagged as visa-sponsorship eligible, so you're targeting the right postings from the start. Once you identify a role, apply directly through UTMB's portal and note your visa status in the application.
Which visa types does University of Texas Medical Branch typically use for Nursing Assistant roles?
UTMB has sponsored H-1B, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and TN visas for roles in this function. F-1 OPT and CPT are most common for students completing healthcare programs in the U.S. H-1B sponsorship applies to candidates in qualifying specialty occupation roles. TN is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals but requires the position to map cleanly to an eligible USMCA occupation category, which is not guaranteed for all Nursing Assistant titles.
What qualifications does University of Texas Medical Branch expect for Nursing Assistant candidates?
UTMB expects candidates to hold an active Texas Nurse Aide certification, which requires completing a state-approved training program and passing a competency evaluation. Clinical experience in an inpatient or long-term care setting strengthens your application. For internationally trained candidates, UTMB's credentialing process will verify that your certification meets Texas state standards before finalizing any offer, so having your documentation organized in advance is essential.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Nursing Assistant role at UTMB?
Timeline depends on visa type. F-1 OPT authorization typically takes three to five months from the application date, so planning ahead of your intended start date is critical. H-1B processing at a cap-exempt institution like UTMB can take two to four months under standard processing, or two to three weeks with USCIS premium processing. Factor in UTMB's four to six week clinical onboarding period on top of any visa processing time when negotiating your start date.
