Verify your NP license before applying
Tennessee requires a separate Advanced Practice Registered Nurse license on top of your RN license. VUMC's credentialing process checks both before extending an offer, so confirm your Tennessee APRN authorization is active and your national board certification is current.
Target specialty units with consistent NP demand
VUMC's highest-volume NP hiring tends to cluster in critical care, oncology, and surgical subspecialties. Applying to roles in these departments increases your odds of reaching a hiring manager familiar with sponsoring international candidates through their HR and legal teams.
Find sponsored NP openings using Migrate Mate
Search Migrate Mate to filter VUMC's open NP positions by visa type. This lets you focus only on roles where sponsorship has been extended before, saving you from applying to listings that may not support your specific visa category.
Clarify H-1B cap status early in conversations
Academic medical centers affiliated with universities can qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers, which means VUMC may be able to file for you outside the annual lottery. Confirm this directly with VUMC's HR or immigration team before the offer stage so you understand your actual filing window.
Prepare your credential evaluation documents in advance
If your nursing degree is from outside the United States, VUMC will require an educational credential evaluation and may request CGFNS certification. Starting this process before you receive an offer prevents delays between acceptance and the USCIS petition filing.
Understand the J-1 waiver path if you hold a J-1 visa
NPs on J-1 visas with a two-year home residency requirement must obtain a Conrad 30 waiver or another DOL-approved waiver before VUMC can sponsor an H-1B. Build at least six months into your timeline to account for state health department review and USCIS processing.

Find NP at Vanderbilt University Medical Center JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Vanderbilt University Medical Center sponsor H-1B visas for NPs?
Yes, VUMC sponsors H-1B visas for Nurse Practitioners. As an academic medical center with a university affiliation, VUMC may qualify as a cap-exempt employer, which allows it to file H-1B petitions year-round rather than only through the annual lottery. You should confirm cap-exempt status directly with VUMC's HR or immigration team during the offer stage, since eligibility depends on the specific department and funding source.
How do I apply for NP jobs at Vanderbilt University Medical Center?
Applications go through VUMC's careers portal, where NP roles are listed under Advanced Practice. You can also use Migrate Mate to browse VUMC's sponsored NP openings filtered by visa type, which makes it easier to identify roles where international candidates have been hired before. Tailor your application to the specialty, as VUMC's hiring teams are discipline-specific and screen for clinical focus area fit alongside licensure.
Which visa types does VUMC commonly use for NP roles?
VUMC most commonly sponsors H-1B visas for NPs, and also works with TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals who qualify under USMCA professional categories. F-1 OPT and CPT can apply for NP graduates completing clinical requirements, and J-1 exchange visitor status is used in some academic training contexts. EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways are available for longer-term employment, typically initiated after an NP has been working at VUMC.
What qualifications does VUMC expect from NP candidates seeking sponsorship?
VUMC expects a Master of Science in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice, national board certification through AANP or ANCC, and a valid Tennessee APRN license. For international graduates, CGFNS certification and an educational credential evaluation from a NACES-approved organization are typically required. Specialty experience in the clinical area you are applying to carries significant weight, particularly in high-acuity departments like critical care or surgical subspecialties.
How long does the sponsorship and hiring process take for NP roles at VUMC?
From offer acceptance to a start date, the timeline depends on your visa category. H-1B filings with USCIS standard processing take three to five months; premium processing can reduce this to around 15 business days. If you need a Tennessee APRN license endorsement or a credential evaluation completed, add four to eight weeks. J-1 waiver holders should plan for an additional three to six months before any H-1B petition can be filed.
