Align Your Credentials Before Applying
VUMC requires PA-C certification through NCCPA and state licensure in Tennessee. Confirm your credentials are active and transferable before submitting applications, since licensing gaps can stall an offer and delay visa filing timelines significantly.
Target Specialty Departments With Recurring Openings
Vanderbilt's surgical subspecialties and inpatient medicine teams post PA roles more consistently than other departments. Focusing your search on those units improves your odds of landing a role with a team experienced in sponsoring international clinical hires.
Understand How VUMC Structures H-1B Petitions
Vanderbilt files H-1B petitions through its central HR and legal team, not at the department level. When you receive an offer, ask HR directly which visa pathway they intend to use and confirm the projected USCIS filing date so you can plan your start.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Open PA Roles
Physician Assistant openings at large academic medical centers get filled quickly. Use Migrate Mate to browse verified PA positions at Vanderbilt that include confirmed visa sponsorship, so you're applying to roles where sponsorship is already on the table.
Ask About TN Eligibility If You Hold Canadian or Mexican Citizenship
PA roles at academic medical centers like VUMC can qualify under the TN visa category for Canadian and Mexican nationals. TN status can be obtained at the border or port of entry without USCIS filing, which shortens the process considerably compared to H-1B.

Find Physician Assistant at Vanderbilt University Medical Center JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Vanderbilt University Medical Center sponsor H-1B visas for Physician Assistants?
Yes, Vanderbilt University Medical Center sponsors H-1B visas for Physician Assistant roles. As a large academic medical center, VUMC has an established process for sponsoring international clinical staff. Sponsorship is handled through VUMC's central HR and legal teams, so once you receive an offer, your hiring department will connect you with that process directly.
How do I apply for Physician Assistant jobs at Vanderbilt University Medical Center?
PA roles at VUMC are posted through their careers portal. You can also browse Physician Assistant openings at Vanderbilt with confirmed visa sponsorship through Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for roles open to international candidates. When applying, confirm with the recruiter upfront that your target role is eligible for the visa type you need, since sponsorship eligibility can vary by department and funding source.
Which visa types does Vanderbilt University Medical Center commonly use for Physician Assistants?
VUMC sponsors H-1B visas most commonly for PA roles, since the position qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at minimum a master's degree or equivalent. They also support TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals, J-1 exchange visitor status for certain training contexts, and Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 pathways for longer-term hires. F-1 OPT and CPT are also recognized for eligible candidates.
What qualifications does Vanderbilt University Medical Center expect for Physician Assistant roles?
VUMC expects candidates to hold a master's degree from an ARC-PA accredited PA program and active PA-C certification through NCCPA. Tennessee state licensure is required before you can start. For specialty departments like surgery or critical care, prior clinical experience in that specialty carries significant weight. International candidates should confirm their degree and certification are recognized under USCIS specialty occupation standards before applying.
How do I understand the H-1B sponsorship timeline for a PA role at Vanderbilt?
After an offer is extended, VUMC's HR team initiates the H-1B petition process, which includes a Labor Condition Application filed with the DOL before the USCIS petition can be submitted. Standard USCIS processing takes several months, though premium processing is available for faster adjudication. If you're transitioning from OPT, account for credentialing and licensing time in Tennessee, which can add weeks to your actual start date.
