Verify your NCCPA certification before applying
Duke requires current NCCPA certification for all PA hires. If you trained internationally, confirm your credentials are recognized before submitting applications. Incomplete certification documentation is one of the most common reasons PA offers get delayed.
Target Duke Health's specialty departments directly
Duke's highest PA hiring volume tends to cluster in surgical specialties, oncology, and cardiology. Search Duke's careers portal by department rather than job title alone to surface openings that match your clinical background and strengthen your sponsorship case.
Ask about E-3 eligibility during offer discussions
Australian citizens should raise E-3 sponsorship early in the offer stage. E-3 has no lottery and processes faster than H-1B, so Duke can often get you started sooner. Confirm whether the role qualifies as a specialty occupation under the standard USCIS definition.
Understand the H-1B cap timing for healthcare roles
If H-1B is your path, registrations open in March for an October start. Duke's academic medical center setting may qualify for cap-exempt filing, which bypasses the lottery entirely. Ask HR directly whether the specific unit you're joining qualifies.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsored PA openings at Duke
Filtering by employer and role type saves significant time when targeting a specific institution. Migrate Mate lets you browse Physician Assistant jobs at Duke University with visa sponsorship confirmed, so you're not applying blind and chasing sponsorship conversations after the fact.
Prepare a complete licensure packet before the PERM stage
If your role requires PERM labor certification under an EB-2 or EB-3 pathway, Duke's legal team will need your state PA license, degree transcripts, and employment verification documents. Gather these early because DOL timelines extend significantly when documentation is incomplete.

Find Physician Assistant at Duke University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Duke University sponsor H-1B visas for Physician Assistants?
Yes, Duke University sponsors H-1B visas for Physician Assistant roles. PA positions typically qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS requirements because the role demands a graduate-level PA education and national certification. Duke's academic medical center status may also allow cap-exempt H-1B filings in some units, which bypasses the annual lottery entirely.
Which visa types does Duke University commonly use for Physician Assistant roles?
Duke sponsors H-1B visas most commonly for PA roles, with E-3 available for Australian citizens as a faster, lottery-free alternative. For longer-term pathways, Duke supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship for qualifying PA employees. The right visa type depends on your nationality, clinical specialty, and the specific department you're joining.
How do I apply for Physician Assistant jobs at Duke University?
Applications go through Duke's official careers portal at careers.duke.edu. Search for Physician Assistant or PA roles filtered by Duke University Health System. You can also use Migrate Mate to browse current sponsored PA openings at Duke before applying directly. Tailor your application to the specialty department, as hiring managers in surgical or oncology units look for relevant clinical experience.
What qualifications does Duke University expect for Physician Assistant candidates?
Duke expects candidates to hold a master's-level PA degree from an ARC-PA accredited program and active NCCPA certification. State licensure in North Carolina is required before your start date. Most specialty department roles also expect prior clinical experience in the relevant area, such as surgical first-assist experience for operative PA positions.
How do I plan my timeline if I need visa sponsorship for a Duke PA role?
Start the conversation about sponsorship during the offer stage, not after. If H-1B is your path and the role is cap-subject, you'll need to register in March for an October start, which can mean a gap of several months. E-3 and cap-exempt H-1B routes move considerably faster. PERM-based Green Card filings typically take one to two years beyond your start date, depending on DOL processing.
