Verify your medical credentials match Duke's requirements
Duke requires ECFMG certification for international medical graduates before any visa petition can move forward. Confirm your USMLE steps, residency completion, and board certification align with the specific department's requirements before applying.
Target Duke's academic departments directly
Duke recruits physicians across its Schools of Medicine and affiliated hospitals. Searching by department, such as internal medicine or radiology, narrows your list to hiring managers who control sponsorship decisions, not just HR gatekeepers.
Use Migrate Mate to find open physician roles at Duke
Physician openings at Duke that include visa sponsorship aren't always easy to identify from general job boards. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Duke University physician roles where sponsorship is confirmed.
Ask about LCA filing timing during the offer stage
Duke's H-1B process requires a certified Labor Condition Application from DOL before USCIS can receive your petition. Confirm with the hiring department how far in advance they initiate the LCA to avoid delays in your start date.
Understand how J-1 waiver status affects your H-1B eligibility
Many physicians completing research or clinical training at Duke arrive on J-1 visas subject to the two-year home residency requirement. If you're in this situation, securing a Conrad 30 waiver or federal agency waiver must happen before any H-1B petition is filed.
Plan for PERM timelines if you want permanent residence
Duke sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 green cards for physicians, but PERM labor certification through DOL can take 18 months or longer. Raise permanent residence interest early in negotiations so the process starts while you're still in valid H-1B status.

Find Physician at Duke University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Duke University sponsor H-1B visas for Physicians?
Yes, Duke University sponsors H-1B visas for physicians across its health system and medical school. The process involves Duke filing a Labor Condition Application with the DOL and then submitting an H-1B petition to USCIS on your behalf. Physician roles in clinical, research, and academic settings are all eligible, though the department initiating the hire typically drives the sponsorship timeline.
How do I apply for Physician jobs at Duke University?
Applications go through Duke's careers portal, where physician openings are listed by department and specialty. For roles that include visa sponsorship, Migrate Mate lets you filter Duke University physician positions where sponsorship has been confirmed. Having your CV, ECFMG certification, board exam results, and any relevant research output ready before applying speeds up the process significantly.
Which visa types does Duke University use for Physician roles?
Duke sponsors H-1B visas as the primary work authorization pathway for international physicians, along with E-3 visas for Australian citizens. For permanent residence, Duke files EB-2 and EB-3 petitions depending on the role and the physician's qualifications. Physicians completing training on J-1 visas may need to resolve a two-year home residency requirement before transitioning to H-1B status at Duke.
What qualifications does Duke University expect from Physician candidates?
Duke expects candidates to hold an MD or DO degree, have completed an accredited residency in the relevant specialty, and carry board certification or active pursuit of it. International medical graduates must hold ECFMG certification. For research-focused physician roles, prior publications or fellowship training in a subspecialty are common expectations. Licensing requirements vary by state, so North Carolina medical licensure or eligibility for it is also required.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for Physicians at Duke?
H-1B processing after USCIS receives the petition typically runs three to six months under standard processing. Duke must file the LCA with DOL first, which adds two to four weeks. If you need premium processing, USCIS targets a 15 business day adjudication window. For permanent residence through PERM, plan for 18 months or more from initiation to an approved I-140 petition, depending on audit risk and DOL backlogs.
