Verify Your Medical Credentials Early
ECFMG certification is a hard requirement for international medical graduates seeking physician roles at U.S. academic medical centers. Start the verification process well before applying, since credentialing delays are the most common reason offers fall through at the filing stage.
Target Fellowship Pipelines Into Faculty Roles
Indiana University frequently transitions physicians from fellowship into attending or faculty positions. Applying through their graduate medical education programs often produces a more direct path to a sponsored role than applying cold to open staff physician postings.
Clarify Sponsorship Scope Before Accepting Offers
Some academic physician offers cover H-1B sponsorship but exclude green card filing. Ask specifically whether the department supports both nonimmigrant and immigrant visa sponsorship, and get written confirmation before signing any employment agreement.
Use Migrate Mate to Identify Open Physician Roles
Browse current physician openings at Indiana University that include visa sponsorship using Migrate Mate. Filtering by sponsor history helps you prioritize departments that have actively supported international physician hires rather than applying broadly across all postings.
Align Your Specialty With High-Demand Departments
Indiana University's academic health system has recurring needs in primary care, psychiatry, and hospital medicine. Physicians in these specialties are more likely to receive both H-1B and green card sponsorship support because shortage designations can strengthen the PERM application and reduce legal barriers for the employer.

Find Physician at Indiana University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Indiana University sponsor H-1B visas for Physicians?
Yes, Indiana University sponsors H-1B visas for physician roles across its health system and medical school. The university has an active international hire program and works with immigration counsel to file H-1B petitions for qualifying candidates. You'll need ECFMG certification, a valid medical license or eligibility in Indiana, and a signed offer letter before the petition can be filed with USCIS.
How do I apply for Physician jobs at Indiana University?
Applications go through Indiana University Health's and IU School of Medicine's respective career portals, depending on whether the role is clinical or academic. Each posting specifies the department, specialty, and employment structure. You can also browse Indiana University physician openings filtered by visa sponsorship availability on Migrate Mate, which surfaces roles where international candidates have a realistic path to sponsorship.
Which visa types does Indiana University commonly use for Physician roles?
Indiana University primarily uses the H-1B for initial physician sponsorship, given its suitability for specialty occupation roles requiring a medical degree. For long-term hires, the university also supports EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa pathways, which require a PERM labor certification filed with the Department of Labor. Physicians in underserved specialties may also be eligible for the EB-2 National Interest Waiver, which bypasses PERM entirely.
What qualifications does Indiana University expect for sponsored Physician roles?
At minimum, you'll need an MD or DO degree, ECFMG certification if you graduated from a foreign medical school, board certification or active eligibility in your specialty, and licensure or eligibility to practice in Indiana. Academic roles may also require research output, publications, or teaching experience. The specific requirements vary significantly by department and whether the position is primarily clinical, research-focused, or a combined faculty appointment.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for Physicians at Indiana University?
For H-1B sponsorship, standard USCIS processing runs three to five months after filing, though premium processing can reduce that to 15 business days. If the university is sponsoring your Green Card through the EB-2 or EB-3 route, add 12 to 18 months for PERM labor certification through DOL before USCIS adjudication even begins. Starting conversations with your department's HR and immigration team at least six months before your intended start date is advisable.
