Get Your Credentials Verified Early
Most physician roles at USF require ECFMG certification, state medical licensure, and board eligibility or certification. Start the credential verification process well before applying, delays here are the most common reason offers stall at academic medical centers.
Target USF Health's Departmental Hiring Cycles
USF Health departments like Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, and Surgery post physician openings on rolling cycles tied to residency completion dates. Applying in the fall or winter aligns your timeline with when faculty search committees are most active.
Clarify the Visa Pathway Before Signing an Offer
USF sponsors multiple visa types for physicians, including H-1B, J-1, TN, and Green Card pathways through EB-2 or EB-3. Confirm with the hiring department which pathway they intend to file under before accepting, since each has different timeline and renewal implications.
Understand the J-1 Waiver Requirement If Applicable
If you completed a residency or fellowship on a J-1 visa, you face a two-year home residency requirement before switching to H-1B. A Conrad 30 waiver through Florida or a federal agency waiver through USCIS can remove this requirement if USF designates the role as a shortage area position.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Physician Openings at USF
Physician roles with visa sponsorship at academic institutions aren't always labeled clearly in general job boards. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for USF physician positions confirmed to offer sponsorship, so you're applying where your visa situation won't disqualify you.
Ask USF HR About PERM Timing for Permanent Residency
If your goal is a Green Card, ask the department coordinator whether USF initiates PERM labor certification as part of the employment offer. Some departments at research universities start this process concurrently with H-1B filing, which can significantly reduce your overall wait time.

Find Physician at University of South Florida JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of South Florida sponsor H-1B visas for Physicians?
Yes, University of South Florida sponsors H-1B visas for Physician roles. As an academic medical institution and H-1B-dependent employer, USF has established processes for sponsoring physicians in both clinical and research-focused positions. The sponsoring department works with USF's immigration compliance office to file the petition, and physicians typically enter on a three-year initial period with extension eligibility.
Which visa types does University of South Florida commonly use for Physician roles?
USF sponsors Physicians under H-1B, J-1, TN (for Canadian and Mexican nationals), and F-1 OPT for physicians completing U.S. training programs. For permanent residency, USF files under EB-2 and EB-3 categories through the PERM labor certification process. The right pathway depends on your nationality, current visa status, and whether you have an outstanding J-1 two-year home residency requirement.
What qualifications does University of South Florida expect for Physician positions?
USF typically requires an MD or DO degree, ECFMG certification for international medical graduates, an active or pending Florida medical license, and board certification or eligibility in the relevant specialty. Research-focused physician roles may also require a record of peer-reviewed publications. Clinical positions often require completion of an accredited U.S. residency program and, for some specialties, fellowship training.
How do I apply for Physician jobs at University of South Florida?
Physician openings at USF are posted through USF Health's faculty recruitment portal and general academic job boards. To find roles confirmed for visa sponsorship, browse Migrate Mate, which filters USF physician positions by sponsorship status. Once you identify a role, apply directly through USF's official application system and indicate your visa sponsorship needs early in the process to avoid delays at the offer stage.
How do I plan my timeline for a Physician visa sponsorship at University of South Florida?
H-1B petitions filed under the standard cap must be submitted by April 1 for an October 1 start date, but cap-exempt employers like USF can file year-round with no lottery requirement, which significantly shortens your planning window. USCIS currently processes standard H-1B petitions in four to six months. If you're on OPT, confirm your expiration date and factor in the time needed for credential verification, state licensure, and PERM initiation if permanent residency is the goal.
