Verify Your Credentials Match Colorado Requirements
University of Colorado physician roles require ECFMG certification for international medical graduates, plus a Colorado medical license or eligibility. Start the licensing process early since Colorado's Medical Board processing can add months to your timeline.
Target Departments with Active Recruitment Pipelines
University of Colorado Health and the CU School of Medicine recruit physicians across specialties like hospital medicine, psychiatry, and primary care. Focus your applications on departments with posted vacancies rather than unsolicited outreach, as faculty and clinical hiring runs through formal search committees.
Understand How J-1 Waiver Affects Your Sponsorship Path
If you completed a residency or fellowship on a J-1 visa, the two-year home residency requirement must be waived before CU can sponsor your H-1B. A Conrad 30 waiver through Colorado's Department of Public Health is the most common route for physicians.
Ask About Cap-Exempt H-1B Filing Directly
As a higher education institution, the University of Colorado qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer. This means USCIS can process your petition year-round without waiting for the April lottery, which significantly shortens your path from offer to work authorization.
Align Your Start Date with PERM Labor Market Realities
If CU sponsors you for an EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card, the PERM process requires DOL to certify no qualified U.S. workers were available. Physician shortages in certain specialties and geographic areas can strengthen the filing, but DOL processing still adds 12 to 18 months before the I-140 stage.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter Physician Openings by Visa Type
Physician job listings at universities often don't specify which visa categories the employer will support. Use Migrate Mate to filter University of Colorado physician roles by the visa types you're eligible for, so you apply only to positions where sponsorship is confirmed.

Find Physician at University of Colorado JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Colorado sponsor H-1B visas for Physicians?
Yes, University of Colorado sponsors H-1B visas for Physicians. As a higher education institution, it qualifies as a cap-exempt employer, meaning petitions can be filed with USCIS at any time of year without going through the annual H-1B lottery. This is a significant advantage for internationally trained physicians who need work authorization quickly after receiving an offer.
Which visa types does University of Colorado commonly use for Physician roles?
University of Colorado sponsors several visa categories for Physicians, including H-1B, J-1, TN (for Canadian and Mexican nationals), and F-1 OPT for recent graduates completing clinical training. For permanent residence, CU uses the EB-2 and EB-3 employment-based Green Card pathways, typically initiated after a physician has been in the role for a period of time.
What qualifications does University of Colorado expect for Physician positions?
CU typically requires an MD or DO degree, completion of an accredited residency program, board certification or eligibility in the relevant specialty, and a valid Colorado medical license or the ability to obtain one. International medical graduates must also hold ECFMG certification. Research or academic experience is valued for faculty-track physician positions within the CU School of Medicine.
How do I apply for Physician jobs at University of Colorado?
Applications are submitted through the University of Colorado's official careers portal, where physician openings are listed by department and campus. You can also browse and filter verified Physician openings at University of Colorado that include visa sponsorship by searching on Migrate Mate, which surfaces roles where sponsorship has been confirmed rather than requiring you to dig through individual job postings.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Physician role at University of Colorado?
For an H-1B, cap-exempt filing at CU typically takes two to four months with standard USCIS processing, or a few weeks with premium processing. J-1 waivers through the Conrad 30 program add several months before the H-1B can be filed. If CU initiates Green Card sponsorship via PERM, the full process from labor certification through I-485 approval often spans three or more years depending on your country of birth.
