Verify Your Medical Credentials Before Applying
UF requires ECFMG certification and an active Florida medical license or eligibility before any visa filing begins. Confirm your credentials are current and transferable to Florida's licensing board before submitting your application.
Target Academic Medicine Roles Strategically
UF's physician openings span clinical, research, and faculty tracks. Roles with a research or teaching component often support J-1 waivers through a Conrad 30 state slot, which can be a faster path into a permanent position than waiting on H-1B processing.
Understand How UF Handles LCA Filing
Your employer files the Labor Condition Application with the DOL before any H-1B petition can be submitted to USCIS. At a large academic institution like UF, this process runs through a central immigration compliance office, so ask HR about their internal timeline early.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Open Physician Roles
Physician openings at UF get filled quickly and span multiple departments. Use Migrate Mate to filter UF listings by visa type so you can identify which open roles align with your specific sponsorship situation before reaching out to hiring managers.
Plan Around Cap-Subject H-1B Filing Windows
If you need a cap-subject H-1B, UF must register you in March for an October start date. Missing that window means a full year's delay. For physicians already in J-1 status, explore whether UF qualifies as a cap-exempt employer through its research affiliation.

Find Physician at University of Florida JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Florida sponsor H-1B visas for Physicians?
Yes, University of Florida sponsors H-1B visas for Physician roles. As a large academic medical institution, UF has an established immigration compliance office that manages H-1B filings, including Labor Condition Applications with the DOL. Physicians already in J-1 status should ask whether their UF role qualifies for cap-exempt H-1B processing through the university's research designation.
How do I apply for Physician jobs at University of Florida?
Applications go through UF Health's official careers portal, where physician openings are posted by department and clinical specialty. You can also browse UF Physician roles filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate. Before applying, confirm your ECFMG certification is current and that you meet Florida medical licensure requirements, since UF will need these in place before initiating any visa petition.
Which visa types does University of Florida commonly use for Physician roles?
University of Florida sponsors H-1B, J-1, E-3, TN, and F-1 OPT for Physician roles, and supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways. J-1 is common for residents and fellows, while H-1B is the standard route for attending physicians. Australian citizens can pursue the E-3, and Canadian and Mexican physicians may qualify under the TN visa as a physician or surgeon category.
What qualifications does University of Florida expect for Physician roles?
UF expects ECFMG certification for international medical graduates, completion of an accredited U.S. residency program, and eligibility for a Florida medical license. Board certification or active board eligibility is standard for attending roles. Research and faculty-track positions may also require demonstrated academic output. Clinical experience within U.S. health systems is a practical advantage in the selection process.
How do I navigate the visa filing timeline when joining University of Florida as a Physician?
Build at least six months of lead time between your intended start date and your first outreach to UF's HR or immigration team. For H-1B, the DOL must certify the LCA before USCIS can receive the petition. If PERM-based Green Card sponsorship is part of your plan, that process can take 18 months or more before USCIS filing even begins, so raise it at the offer stage.
