Tips for Finding Physician Jobs at University of Utah
Verify Your Credentials Match State Licensing Requirements
Utah requires a valid state medical license before you can practice, so confirm your foreign medical degree and ECFMG certification align with the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing requirements before applying.
Target Departments With Active Recruitment Pipelines
University of Utah's clinical departments, including internal medicine, psychiatry, and surgery, post physician openings through both the university careers portal and specialty society job boards. Focus applications on departments with posted vacancies, not speculative outreach.
Ask Recruiters About J-1 Waiver Support Early
If you completed a residency or fellowship on a J-1 visa, clarify whether University of Utah will sponsor a Conrad 30 or Interested Government Agency waiver. Academic medical centers frequently support these, but you need written commitment before accepting an offer.
Understand When H-1B Cap Exemption Applies to You
As a higher education institution, University of Utah is cap-exempt under USCIS rules, meaning your H-1B petition can be filed at any time of year without entering the annual lottery. Confirm this status with the university's immigration team during offer negotiations.
Browse Open Physician Roles on Migrate Mate
Filter by University of Utah on Migrate Mate to see current physician openings alongside each role's known sponsorship history, so you can prioritize applications where visa support has already been confirmed for this position type.
Build Your Application File Before the Offer Stage
Gather your ECFMG certificate, board exam scores, training certificates, and any prior visa documentation before an offer arrives. University of Utah's HR and immigration teams move faster when candidates submit complete credential packages at the point of hire.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does University of Utah sponsor H-1B visas for Physicians?
Yes. University of Utah sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Physician roles. As an institution of higher education, it is cap-exempt under USCIS rules, which means petitions can be filed year-round without going through the annual lottery. This is a meaningful practical advantage for physicians who need to start or transition employment outside the standard April filing window.
Which visa types are commonly used for Physician roles at University of Utah?
Physician roles at University of Utah are most commonly supported through H-1B, J-1 visa, and TN visas depending on the candidate's nationality and training background. Physicians who completed U.S. residency on a J-1 may pursue a waiver pathway before transitioning to H-1B status. The university also sponsors immigrant visa pathways, including EB-2 and EB-3, for physicians seeking long-term permanent residence.
How do I apply for Physician jobs at University of Utah?
Applications go through the University of Utah's official careers portal, where physician openings are posted by department. You can also browse current Physician openings at University of Utah with confirmed sponsorship history on Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa type so you can focus on positions aligned with your immigration status. Prepare your CV, ECFMG certificate, and licensure documents before submitting.
What qualifications does University of Utah expect from Physician candidates?
Candidates are generally expected to hold an MD or DO degree from an accredited institution, have completed U.S. residency training in the relevant specialty, and hold or be eligible for a Utah medical license. Board certification or active pursuit of board eligibility is typically required. For international medical graduates, ECFMG certification is a baseline requirement before any credentialing or visa process can begin.
How do I estimate the timeline for starting a Physician role at University of Utah with visa sponsorship?
The timeline depends on your visa category and current immigration status. H-1B transfers for cap-exempt employers typically take four to eight weeks with standard processing, or two to three weeks with USCIS premium processing. J-1 waiver applications can add several months before H-1B filing begins. Credentialing and state medical licensure run concurrently but should be initiated as early as possible, as those processes often run eight to twelve weeks independently.
