Tips for Finding Physician Jobs at Medical College of Wisconsin
Align your credentials with ECFMG certification early
Medical College of Wisconsin requires ECFMG certification for international medical graduates before any sponsorship process can move forward. Get this verified well before applying so your paperwork doesn't stall an offer at the credentialing stage.
Target departments with active recruitment cycles
MCW's academic departments in areas like internal medicine, psychiatry, and family medicine run rolling recruitment. Applying during a department's active hiring window, rather than off-cycle, significantly improves your chance of reaching the sponsorship conversation.
Understand how TN status applies to Physicians
If you're Canadian or Mexican, TN status covers Physicians and avoids the H-1B lottery entirely. MCW sponsors TN, so clarify with their HR team whether your specialty and degree meet the TN physician requirements under USMCA.
Ask about H-1B cap-exempt status in your offer conversation
As an academic medical institution, MCW may qualify as a cap-exempt employer, meaning H-1B petitions aren't subject to the annual lottery. Confirm this with the HR or GME office directly when you receive an offer so you understand your filing timeline.
Use Migrate Mate to identify open Physician roles at MCW
Before reaching out to recruiters, browse current openings and filter by visa sponsorship type. Migrate Mate surfaces Physician positions at MCW specifically tagged for sponsorship, saving you time qualifying roles before you apply.
Prepare for PERM labor certification on immigrant visa paths
If your goal is an EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card, MCW will need to run a DOL PERM process before filing your immigrant petition. This can take 18 months or more, so raise long-term immigration goals with HR during or shortly after the offer stage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Medical College of Wisconsin sponsor H-1B visas for Physicians?
Yes, Medical College of Wisconsin sponsors H-1B visas for Physician roles. As an academic medical institution, MCW may qualify as a cap-exempt employer under USCIS rules, which means eligible petitions can be filed outside the annual lottery and at any time of year. Confirm your specific department's cap-exempt status with MCW's HR or Graduate Medical Education office during the offer process.
How do I apply for Physician jobs at Medical College of Wisconsin?
You can browse and apply for Physician positions at Medical College of Wisconsin through Migrate Mate, which lists open roles filtered by visa sponsorship type. MCW's recruitment process for Physicians typically involves submitting a CV and cover letter, followed by departmental interviews and credentialing review. International medical graduates should have ECFMG certification ready before or shortly after applying.
Which visa types does Medical College of Wisconsin commonly use for Physician roles?
MCW sponsors H-1B, TN visa, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and immigrant visas including EB-2 and EB-3 for Physician positions. H-1B is the most common path for physicians employed in specialty roles. TN visa is available to Canadian and Mexican citizens whose specialty qualifies under USMCA. For long-term residency goals, EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship typically follows an initial period of H-1B employment.
What qualifications does Medical College of Wisconsin expect for Physician roles?
MCW expects candidates to hold an MD or DO degree, with board certification or active board eligibility in their specialty. International medical graduates must hold valid ECFMG certification. Wisconsin medical licensure or eligibility is required before you can practice clinically. Academic or research-focused Physician roles may additionally expect a publication record or prior fellowship training in a relevant subspecialty.
How do I navigate the visa timeline when accepting a Physician offer at MCW?
Once you have a written offer, MCW's HR team initiates the sponsorship paperwork. For H-1B, USCIS premium processing can reduce approval time to 15 business days, which matters if you're transitioning from OPT or another status with a hard end date. For EB-2 or EB-3, expect the DOL PERM process to run in parallel and take significantly longer. Start these conversations before you sign, not after.
