Tips for Finding Medical Assistant Jobs at Medical College of Wisconsin
Align your credentials with U.S. clinical standards
Academic medical centers like Medical College of Wisconsin expect Medical Assistants to hold a recognized U.S. certification such as CMA or RMA. If your training was completed abroad, get a credential evaluation through NACES before applying.
Target postings tied to specific departments
Medical College of Wisconsin hires Medical Assistants across specialized clinics, from oncology to primary care. Applying to department-specific roles rather than general openings signals fit and increases the chance your application reaches a hiring manager with a real vacancy.
Confirm OPT or CPT eligibility before your interview
If you're on an F-1 visa, verify your program's CIP code supports clinical or health sciences practical training. USCIS requires the OPT position to be directly related to your degree field, and Medical Assistant roles must map clearly to your coursework.
Understand the TN pathway for clinical support roles
Canadian and Mexican nationals with qualifying medical training may be eligible for TN status as a Medical Technologist or similar category. Confirm your specific job duties match the DOL-defined TN occupation list before your employer pursues this route.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open Medical Assistant roles
Search Migrate Mate to browse current Medical Assistant openings at Medical College of Wisconsin filtered by visa sponsorship type. This saves time identifying which postings are actively hiring and which sponsorship categories the college is currently filing under.
Ask HR about PERM timing during the offer stage
If you're targeting a Green Card path through EB-2 or EB-3, the PERM labor certification process can take 12 to 18 months before USCIS even receives the petition. Raise this with HR before accepting an offer so both sides can plan around your current status expiration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Medical College of Wisconsin sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Assistants?
Yes, Medical College of Wisconsin sponsors H-1B visas for Medical Assistant roles. Academic medical centers qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning they can file petitions at any time of year without waiting for the annual lottery. This is a significant advantage over private-sector employers and makes H-1B sponsorship more accessible for candidates targeting this institution.
How do I apply for Medical Assistant jobs at Medical College of Wisconsin?
Applications go through Medical College of Wisconsin's careers portal. Search for Medical Assistant openings, review the departmental requirements carefully, and tailor your application to the specific clinic or division listed. If you need visa sponsorship, note this early in the process. You can also use Migrate Mate to find current Medical Assistant openings at Medical College of Wisconsin filtered by visa sponsorship type before applying directly.
Which visa types are commonly used for Medical Assistant roles at Medical College of Wisconsin?
Medical College of Wisconsin supports several visa categories for Medical Assistants, including H-1B, TN visa, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and employment-based Green Cards through EB-2 and EB-3. F-1 OPT and CPT are common entry points for recent graduates, while H-1B is the primary long-term sponsorship path. EB-2 and EB-3 apply for candidates pursuing permanent residence once employed.
What qualifications are expected for Medical Assistant positions at Medical College of Wisconsin?
Most postings require a Medical Assistant diploma or certificate from an accredited program plus a recognized U.S. certification such as CMA (AAMA) or RMA. Clinical experience in a specialty care or academic medicine setting strengthens your application. International candidates should have credentials evaluated by a NACES-approved agency to confirm U.S. equivalency before applying.
How do I plan my timeline if I need H-1B sponsorship for a Medical Assistant role?
Because Medical College of Wisconsin is a cap-exempt employer, H-1B petitions can be filed year-round rather than in the April lottery window. USCIS standard processing currently takes two to four months, though premium processing can reduce this to 15 business days. Start conversations with HR about sponsorship intent before your current authorization expires to avoid gaps in work authorization.
